Jones County, Georgia — A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken a local community after a 13-year-old girl with autism, Maddie Benson, was found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ following a nighttime disappearance that ended in a fatal roadway incident.
According to Matt Wineman, the sheriff of Jones County, authorities began searching for Maddie Benson after she was reported missing late Monday night.
She had last been seen around 10:00 p.m., prompting concern due to her condition, as she was described as autistic and nonverbal.

The search came to a tragic conclusion early Tuesday morning. Shortly after 7:00 a.m., Maddie Benson’s body was discovered along 10 Mile Fork Road.
Investigators later determined that she had been struck by a dump truck hours earlier.
Officials with the Georgia State Patrol reported that the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m., when Maddie was walking in the middle of the roadway.
The driver of the dump truck, whose idenтιтy has not been publicly released, initially believed he had hit an animal.

He and another pᴀssing motorist stopped and searched the area but were unable to locate anything in the darkness.
At daylight, the second driver returned to the scene and discovered the teenager’s body in a deep ditch nearby.
Authorities were immediately notified, and the dump truck driver also returned to cooperate with investigators.
After reviewing the circumstances, troopers confirmed that no charges will be filed against the driver, indicating that the collision was not deemed criminal.
“This is not how we want any search to end,” Sheriff Matt Wineman said in a statement. “To have a young life taken in any manner is tragic, and my thoughts and prayers are with Maddie’s family.”
