Every parent’s greatest fear is losing a child — but nothing prepares the heart for the unimaginable pain of a loss that should never have happened. In East Los Angeles, a beautiful 4-year-old girl named Mia Gonzales was taken far too soon, leaving her family shattered and a community in mourning.

On January 25, 2024, police discovered Mia inside a car in the 800 block of Civic Center Way, just south of the Pomona Freeway. Officers rushed her to a nearby hospital, but despite their best efforts, the little girl could not be saved. After a thorough court process, Avalos was convicted of second-degree murder. A judge recently sentenced her to 25 years to life in prison. Prosecutors told the court that Avalos had acted with intention, describing how she had dressed her young daughter in nice clothes that day before the tragic events unfolded. Deputy District Attorney MacKenzie Teymouri stated in court, “This wasn’t rash or impulsive. She thought about it. She did it.”

The defense offered a different perspective, but the jury’s verdict and the judge’s sentence made one thing clear: justice had been served for Mia. Court documents also revealed that the child had been in the vehicle for several days before she was found, adding another layer of heartbreak to an already devastating story.

Those who knew the family expressed shock at the news.
