When the grandfather returned home around 10:30 a.m., he found that Oliver’s condition had drastically changed. The baby was inconsolable, drifting in and out of consciousness. His behavior alarmed everyone in the household.

According to the 14-year-old witness, they also woke up around 10:30 a.m. to see Oliver in distress. At some point afterward, he vomited. Then, his ears and legs began turning purple, signaling a severe medical emergency.

Despite the baby’s worsening condition, the step-grandmother initially sent the grandfather out to get milk. Finally, realizing the severity, they called 911 at approximately 11:52 a.m. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to provide critical ᴀssistance.

Oliver was hospitalized in critical condition. Doctors documented an occipital skull fracture along with acute subdural hematomas. In layman’s terms, a bone in the back of his head was broken, and there was significant bleeding on his brain.

Medical experts also identified diffuse brain edema, which is severe swelling of the brain. Extensive retinal hemorrhages were found in both eyes. Bruising and petechiae further indicated trauma inconsistent with an accident.

Multiple medical experts testified that these were serious issues and not the result of ordinary incidents. They explained that brain bleeding and swelling occur only when a baby suffers significant trauma. Retinal hemorrhages are especially concerning because they are often ᴀssociated with severe head injuries.

Doctors testified that after sustaining these injuries, Oliver would have immediately shown abnormal symptoms. A critical care physician stated that Oliver would have appeared gravely ill within 30 to 60 minutes.

 No later than 90 minutes, the baby would have become unresponsive, and within two hours, unconsciousness would be expected.
