JUST IN: DeSantis Leads Plan to Eliminate Property Taxes in Florida

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called a special legislative session to advance a significant property tax reform plan. During a news conference in Tampa, he introduced the “Save Our Homes from Excessive Property Taxes” proposal, which aims to sharply reduce and eventually eliminate property taxes on homesteaded primary residences.
DeSantis noted that property tax collections have nearly doubled over the past seven years, increasing from $32 billion to $60 billion, with projections reaching $83 billion by 2032. He argued that homeowners are paying more without seeing improved services.

The plan calls for a consтιтutional amendment to immediately raise the homestead exemption to $250,000. If approved by 60% of voters in November 2026, it would set a schedule for full elimination of property taxes on homesteads.
To maintain essential services such as schools, police, and fire protection, remaining tax revenue would be limited to core public needs, with the state providing grant support to local governments. Some local leaders, including St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch, have raised concerns about potential cuts to other community programs.

The proposal also includes a five-year residency requirement for new Florida residents after January 1, 2027, before qualifying for the expanded exemption.
The special session runs from June 1 to June 3, 2026. DeSantis stated clearly: “I want to get something done.” If pᴀssed, the measure would deliver major financial relief to many Florida homeowners.
