Investigation Continues Following Tragic Kruger National Park Incident as Two Suspects Are Detained

Authorities in South Africa and Mozambique have reported an important development in the investigation into the tragic deaths of Western Cape couple Dina and Ernst Marais, bringing a measure of progress to a case that has deeply saddened communities across the region.
Dina Marais, 73, and her husband, Ernst Marais, 71, both from Mossel Bay, had traveled to Kruger National Park in May to celebrate Dina’s birthday. What was intended to be a special getaway in one of Africa’s most treasured wildlife destinations turned into a heartbreaking tragedy.

The couple entered the park on May 17, 2026, and were later reported missing on May 21 after concerns arose regarding their whereabouts near the Pafuri picnic site. Following an extensive search effort, their bodies were discovered on May 22 in the Levubu River near its confluence with the Limpopo River.
Investigators also noted that the couple’s green Ford Ranger double-cab vehicle was missing, prompting a wider inquiry that eventually extended beyond South Africa’s borders.
In the weeks that followed, law enforcement agencies from South Africa and Mozambique worked closely together alongside SANParks officials and other partners to pursue leads connected to the case. Their coordinated efforts led to the recovery of the missing vehicle in Chókwè, Mozambique, on May 26, an important development that helped advance the investigation.
Authorities subsequently detained two Mozambican nationals in connection with the matter. The first suspect, aged 32, was detained in Chókwè on June 1, while a second suspect, aged 33, was detained the following day in Xai-Xai, located in Gaza Province. Investigators have indicated that evidence gathered during the inquiry links both individuals to the ongoing case.

As of June 2026, legal proceedings are underway in Mozambique, with authorities continuing to examine all available evidence. Officials have stated that additional charges could be considered as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the efforts of everyone involved in the operation, highlighting the importance of cooperation between agencies. Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba also emphasized the value of international partnerships in addressing cases that cross national borders.
The case has drawn significant attention throughout Southern Africa, not only because of its tragic circumstances but also because of the extensive collaboration between law enforcement agencies. It has underscored the importance of regional cooperation in ensuring accountability and supporting affected families.

For those who knew Dina and Ernst Marais, the latest developments bring some reᴀssurance that authorities remain committed to seeking answers. Friends, family members, and community supporters have continued to remember the couple for their love of travel, nature, and the time they shared together.
While many questions remain, investigators are continuing their work to establish a complete understanding of the events that led to this tragedy. Officials have pledged to keep the public informed through appropriate channels as the legal process moves forward.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring a thorough and transparent examination of the case while honoring the memory of Dina and Ernst Marais and supporting those affected by their loss.
