More than a month after 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells vanished during a Fourth of July boat outing on Horn Island off the coast of Mississippi the circumstances surrounding his death continue to baffle investigators family members and a growing national audience. Wells a recent graduate of Ocean Springs High School and a wide receiver for the Southwest Mississippi Community College football team left his home on the evening of July 3 after preparing dinner for his family. The following morning he joined a group of friends for a trip to the federally protected barrier island roughly ten miles offshore a popular destination that draws hundreds of young people for holiday gatherings. Boats carried the group to the western end of the island around mid-morning.

By the time the vessels returned to the mainland later that day Wells was not among them. His cellphone however made the journey back with his friends. The family reported him missing immediately.
