Heartbroken Father Pays Tribute to Three-Year-Old Noah Woods After Body Found in Suffolk Pond

The father of three-year-old Noah Woods has shared a deeply moving tribute after the tragic discovery of his son’s body in a pond near the playground where the toddler vanished. Rhys Woods described Noah as “the sweetest and most innocent little boy, with nothing but love to give,” saying the family is completely heartbroken and will miss him every day.

Noah disappeared at around 3pm on Tuesday from a playground in Merriam Close, Brantham, a village in Suffolk close to the EsSєx border. He had been playing with a relative when he became separated. The little boy, who lived with his family in nearby East Bergholt, was non-verbal, partially deaf, and was in the process of being ᴀssessed for autism. These factors made the search more difficult, as he would not have responded if people called his name.

What followed was one of the largest community search efforts the area had seen in recent years. At least 1,300 members of the public joined professional teams from Suffolk Police, the Metropolitan Police dive unit, fire service, coastguard, ambulance crews, and specialist dog and helicopter units. Volunteers travelled from as far away as Birmingham and Hampshire. Searchers combed woodland, fields, and the banks of the River Stour. Local businesses, the village hall, Brantham Leisure Centre, and St Michael’s Church all opened their doors to support the effort.

On Wednesday afternoon, specialist divers recovered a child’s body from Decoy Pond, a lake close to the playground. Police later confirmed that the body had been formally identified as Noah. Suffolk Police said his death is not being treated as suspicious, although officers still have inquiries to complete before a file is pᴀssed to the coroner.

In a Facebook message shared with the community, Rhys Woods wrote that the family had held on to the hope that Noah was simply hiding somewhere and would be found safe. He thanked every person and organisation that took part in the search, listing police forces, emergency services, local venues, private dog units, and ordinary people who gave up their time. “The compᴀssion shown by all of you will never be forgotten by us, and brought us comfort and strength at the darkest time of our lives,” he said. Speaking directly to his son, he added that it had been a privilege to be Noah’s parents and to fill the short three years of his life with so much love. “Noah, you will be loved forever, you will never be forgotten.”

The loss has deeply affected Brantham, a village of around 2,600 people that has already known tragedy. In 2024, local resident Anita Rose was attacked and killed while walking her dog; her murderer was later arrested after a lengthy manhunt. Residents and community leaders have spoken of a strong sense of togetherness in the face of fresh grief. The rector of St Michael’s Church described Brantham as a place that knows how to support one another through difficult times. Parish council representatives said the response from local people had been extraordinary and that Noah would remain in the memory of the village.

Tributes continue to be left at the playground, with flowers, soft toys, and messages from children and adults. Ahead of a Premier League match between Everton and Ipswich Town, both sets of supporters stood to applaud in Noah’s memory as his pH๏τograph was shown on the big screen. Players wore black armbands. Ipswich defender Leif Davis donated £2,000 to a fundraising appeal set up for the family, and several club representatives laid flowers at the site where Noah went missing. By the weekend the appeal, organised by a local fathers’ group, had raised more than £100,000 from thousands of donors.

Superintendent Tom Pearse of Suffolk Police thanked Noah’s family for their patience throughout the search and asked the public to now respect their need for privacy and space. He noted that the scale of public support had been overwhelming and reflected the strong community spirit of the area.

Noah leaves behind his parents and a younger brother. In just three years he touched the hearts of many people across the region and beyond. The family has asked for time to grieve while expressing lasting graтιтude for the kindness shown to them in their darkest hours.
