HEART-STOPPING: 8 Riders Trapped at the Top of Roller Coaster in Galveston

Galveston, Texas — In a dramatic incident that drew significant attention from local media and emergency services, eight riders were safely rescued Thursday evening after they were left dangling high in the air for more than three hours on the Iron Shark roller coaster at Pleasure Pier in Galveston, Texas.
The ordeal began around 5:35 p.m. when the popular steel roller coaster suddenly malfunctioned during its initial ascent on the towering 100-foot vertical lift hill. Instead of completing the climb and proceeding with the ride, the coaster came to a complete stop, leaving the eight pᴀssengers suspended precariously near the top of the structure, overlooking the pier and the surrounding waters.
Galveston Police Department officers responded quickly to the scene, and firefighters from the Galveston Fire Department were called in to carry out the rescue operation. Using a specialized ladder truck and safety harnesses, rescuers carefully extracted each rider one by one in a slow and methodical process that ultimately took approximately three and a half hours to complete. The careful approach was necessary to ensure the safety of both the stranded pᴀssengers and the rescue personnel working at significant height.

Local television stations captured the tense situation live, broadcasting footage of the riders waiting patiently yet visibly anxious as they remained suspended high above the amusement park. The dramatic scenes quickly spread across social media and news outlets, highlighting the unexpected challenges that can arise even at well-maintained entertainment venues.
According to officials, some of the riders were students from Energized for STEM Academy Middle School and Energized for STEM Academy High School, part of the Houston Independent School District (HISD). The group was participating in an organized field trip at the time of the incident. In an official statement, the Houston Independent School District expressed relief at the safe outcome:

“We are grateful that all students, staff and chaperones are safe. School administration is in direct contact with the families of all students who were on the trip. We are thankful for the rescue efforts of the first responders and park personnel.”
Pleasure Pier Chief Operating Officer Terry Turney addressed the situation in a statement, explaining that the ride operated as designed by stopping immediately upon detecting the malfunction to prioritize guest safety. He emphasized that the park’s primary focus was on the well-being of the visitors:
“The ride experienced a malfunction at its initial ascent. However, as designed, it immediately stopped to keep everyone safe. Our focus immediately shifted to the safety of our guests. Therefore, we contacted the Fire Department to ᴀssist, ensuring all guests were safely removed from the ride.”
Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the riders, staff, or rescuers. All eight individuals were safely returned to the ground and received support from park personnel and emergency services following the lengthy ordeal.

In the aftermath of the incident, Pleasure Pier management announced that the Iron Shark roller coaster has been temporarily taken out of service. The ride will undergo a comprehensive inspection and thorough maintenance checks by technicians before it is allowed to resume operations. This precautionary measure aims to prevent any future malfunctions and to reᴀssure the public of the park’s commitment to safety.
The event serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous safety protocols at amusement parks, even as millions of visitors enjoy thrill rides across the country each year. As of now, the investigation into the exact cause of the mechanical failure is ongoing, with both park officials and local authorities working together to ensure such an incident does not happen again. All affected guests have since been able to continue their day or return home safely.
