A Hawaii family experienced the surprise of a lifetime when what began as a routine fertility journey resulted in one of the rarest multiple births imaginable.

Ray and Marcie Dela Cruz became parents to quintuplets after welcoming five babies at once — daughter Kamali‘i and four identical sons, Kapena, Kaolu, Keahi, and Kupono. Their arrival transformed the couple’s household overnight and marked a historic milestone as the only surviving set of quintuplets ever born in Hawaii.

The birth was considered extraordinarily rare. While quadruplet pregnancies are already uncommon, identical quadruplets are exceptionally unusual, occurring only in a tiny fraction of births worldwide. The addition of a fifth baby made the pregnancy even more remarkable.

Medical specialists explained that the pregnancy developed through an extremely rare biological process. One embryo divided into two, and then each of those embryos split again, resulting in four genetically identical boys. A second embryo developed separately into a singleton girl, creating a total of five babies.

Doctors described the odds as comparable to winning the lottery.

The couple had previously undergone in vitro fertilization and were already parents to a son, Makaio. During an earlier IVF treatment, two embryos had resulted in the birth of one healthy child. When they repeated the procedure, they hoped for another successful pregnancy but never imagined they would be preparing for five newborns at once.

Throughout the pregnancy, Marcie received specialized care from a team of medical experts who closely monitored both her health and the babies’ development. Following their birth, the quintuplets spent approximately two months receiving care in a neonatal intensive care unit before becoming strong enough to go home.

The transition to life with five infants presented enormous challenges, from feeding schedules and diaper changes to coordinating care around the clock. Yet the family embraced the experience, grateful for the extraordinary blessing they had received.

Today, the Dela Cruz family remains a remarkable example of resilience, teamwork, and the unpredictable nature of parenthood. What began as a hope for one additional child ultimately became a family of eight, with five babies arriving at once and creating a story that continues to amaze people around the world.
