Former New Jersey Elementary Teacher Pleads Guilty After Years-Long Relationship with Student Leads to Birth of Child

A former fifth-grade teacher in southern New Jersey has pleaded guilty in a case that began years earlier when she developed an inappropriate relationship with one of her students, ultimately resulting in the birth of a child. Laura Caron, 36, entered the plea on October 30, 2026, to one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child with Sєxual conduct, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced.

Under the plea agreement, Caron faces a recommended prison term of five years. She must also permanently surrender her teaching license, is prohibited from any future public employment, will be required to register under New Jersey’s Megan’s Law, and will remain under parole supervision for the rest of her life. Before sentencing, she is scheduled to undergo an evaluation to determine whether her behavior is classified as repeтιтive or compulsive, a finding that could affect the final sentence imposed by the court. Formal sentencing is set for January 8, 2027.

Caron first met the boy, who was born in 2005, while teaching him and his brother at Middle Township Elementary School in Cape May Court House. Over time the family grew close to the teacher. According to reports, the parents allowed their children—including the boy, his brother, and a sister—to stay overnight at Caron’s home multiple times a week. Prosecutors later alleged that an inappropriate Sєxual relationship began in 2016, when the boy was 11 years old, and continued until he was approximately 15. Caron became pregnant when the student was 13 and gave birth to a daughter in 2019.

The relationship remained secret for several years. It came to light in December 2024 after the boy’s father noticed a strong physical resemblance between Caron’s young daughter, himself, and his son in a Facebook pH๏τograph. That discovery prompted an investigation. Authorities subsequently gathered statements from family members describing observations made while the children were staying at Caron’s residence, including accounts from the boy’s siblings.

Despite the criminal charges, the young man at the center of the case—now about 21 years old—has publicly defended Caron. He has stated that he initiated the relationship, does not view himself as a victim, and has called for the charges against her to be dropped. In interviews he has insisted that Caron never groomed or manipulated him. Prosecutors, however, proceeded with the case on the basis of the student’s age at the time of the events and the teacher’s position of trust.

Caron was originally charged in January 2025 with aggravated Sєxual ᴀssault, Sєxual ᴀssault, and endangering the welfare of a child. She was later indicted on those counts. The plea agreement reduced her potential exposure significantly. Prosecutor Sutherland emphasized that teachers occupy a position of significant trust and that the allegations represented a serious violation of that responsibility.

The case has attracted widespread attention because of the student’s young age when the relationship began, the length of time it continued, the birth of a child, and the fact that the family had placed the children in the teacher’s care on a regular overnight basis. With the guilty plea now entered, the focus shifts to the January 2027 sentencing hearing, where the court will determine the final terms of Caron’s punishment and the results of the required behavioral evaluation.
