Family Remembers Georgia Teen After Fatal Shooting While Trying to Help Another Child

A Georgia family is remembering a 16-year-old as a courageous and compᴀssionate young man after authorities say he was fatally sH๏τ while trying to protect another child.
According to the Clayton County Police Department, 16-year-old Jalil Jones was killed in Jonesboro on June 19.
On June 24, investigators announced the arrest of Joshua Clinton, who is in his late 20s. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including murder and cruelty to children, in connection with the teenager’s death.

According to a GoFundMe campaign created for Jalil’s family, he was sH๏τ while trying to protect a younger boy who was being attacked. Family members said he stepped in to help someone else, an act they believe reflected the kindness and courage that defined his life.
Family friend and mentor Lyniece Wilkes also described Jalil as a respected young man whose death has deeply affected the Jonesboro community.
Loved ones remembered Jalil as someone known for his bravery, compᴀssion, and willingness to help others. They said he had recently begun working with his uncle, was looking forward to earning his driver’s permit, and was excited about the opportunities ahead of him.
According to court records, Clinton faces charges including murder, reckless conduct, cruelty to children, contributing to the deprivation of a child resulting in serious injury or death, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, battery, tampering with evidence, and discharging a firearm near a public roadway.
Court records did not indicate whether Clinton has entered a plea. The public defender’s office representing him declined to comment as the investigation and court proceedings continue.
