In a landmark 2021 Science paper, paleontologists announced Cymbospondylus youngorum — the earliest known giant vertebrate on Earth. Discovered in Nevada’s Augusta Mountains, this colossal Triᴀssic ichthyosaur measured over 17 metres (56 feet) long and weighed roughly 45 tonnes, matching the size of a large modern sperm whale.
Led by P. Martin Sander of the University of Bonn, the international team described a spectacular 2-metre skull plus vertebrae, shoulder, and forefin from the 246-million-year-old Fossil Hill Member. The animal lived only about three million years after the first ichthyosaurs appeared, proving that gigantism evolved at lightning speed in marine reptiles following the Permian extinction.
Unlike later whale giants that took tens of millions of years to reach similar sizes, C. youngorum achieved epic proportions almost immediately. Its robust skull and predatory adaptations show it was an apex hunter in a recovering ocean ecosystem that already supported a full range of body sizes — from small 2-metre species to this true leviathan.

The find demonstrates that complex marine food webs rebounded faster and more dramatically than previously thought, with energy flows capable of sustaining multiple giant predators. The holotype skull is now on display at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, where it continues to astonish visitors.
Sander and colleagues called it “the first ocean giant,” underscoring how quickly life can scale up to extreme sizes when conditions allow. Cymbospondylus youngorum cements the Middle Triᴀssic as the true dawn of marine megafauna and proves that Earth’s greatest giants emerged far earlier — and faster — than anyone imagined.
