What initially appeared to be a tragic bathroom accident ultimately became one of the United Kingdom’s most heartbreaking child abuse cases, as evidence presented in court revealed months of severe and repeated abuse suffered by 13-month-old Preston Davey.

On 27 July 2023, Jamie Varley told police that he had left Preston unattended in the bath for only a few minutes before returning to find him submerged in water. At first, the explanation appeared plausible. However, a post-mortem examination quickly disproved that account.

Medical experts found that Preston had not drowned. There was no water in his lungs or stomach. Instead, pathologists documented approximately 40 external and internal injuries that had been inflicted over a four-month period, including fractures, extensive bruising, and injuries consistent with repeated Sєxual abuse.

The court heard that Preston died from airway obstruction following a final Sєxual ᴀssault.

Jamie Varley, 37, a former secondary school teacher and former designated safeguarding lead from Blackpool, was sentenced to a whole-life order, meaning he will spend the remainder of his life in prison. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, received a 25-year sentence after being convicted of causing or allowing Preston’s death, child cruelty offences, and Sєxual ᴀssault-related charges.

The case has also raised serious questions about multiple missed opportunities to protect Preston.

Born on 16 June 2022, Preston was taken into care by Oldham Council just five days after birth due to concerns surrounding his biological family. After spending his first nine months with foster carers, he was placed with Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley in April 2023 with the intention of adoption.

Within weeks, warning signs began to emerge.

Preston developed unexplained bruises, suffered seizures, and experienced breathing difficulties. On 25 May, he was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital after becoming floppy and unresponsive. Although staff noted bruising that did not fully match the explanation provided, the injuries were ultimately considered non-suspicious.

Over the following weeks, Preston returned to hospital several more times with additional injuries and concerning symptoms, including vomiting, fever, head bruising, and a fractured elbow. Each time, concerns were either minimized or not escalated.

Court proceedings also revealed that around the same period, Varley had confided to a colleague that he was experiencing “dark thoughts” about harming the child. No intervention followed.

Meanwhile, Varley maintained an online image of a happy family life, sharing adoption celebrations and posting content about Preston on social media.

Behind that public image, prosecutors said Preston was being subjected to escalating physical and Sєxual abuse. Investigators discovered that Varley had also created and distributed indecent images and videos involving the child.

On 27 July 2023, before calling emergency services, Varley recorded a brief video showing Preston in severe respiratory distress. Despite nearly an hour of resuscitation efforts at hospital, Preston was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at 7:18 p.m.

During police interviews, Varley denied responsibility and insisted he would fight to prove his innocence.

However, during an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court, prosecutors presented extensive forensic, medical, digital, and witness evidence that contradicted his account. The jury convicted Varley of murder, Sєxual offences, child cruelty offences, and multiple indecent image charges. McGowan-Fazakerley was also convicted on several related charges.

The sentencing judge described the abuse as both “sadistic” and “prolonged.”

The case has since prompted renewed calls for accountability. Members of Parliament Chris Webb and Andrew Snowden have urged authorities to conduct a full public inquiry into how numerous warning signs were repeatedly overlooked.

A child safeguarding practice review has also resumed, with investigators examining whether ᴀssumptions surrounding Varley’s professional background as a teacher and former safeguarding lead may have influenced decision-making.

Preston’s life was tragically short. From being removed from his birth family as an infant to being placed in what was intended to be a safe adoptive home, his story has become a painful reminder of the importance of early intervention and robust child protection systems.

The case has highlighted how repeated warning signs, when left unaddressed, can have devastating consequences for society’s most vulnerable children.
