Conjoined Twin Sisters Successfully Separated After Life-Changing 10-Hour Surgery đź’ś

A pair of conjoined twin sisters are now getting the chance to grow up independently after an extraordinary surgery gave them a new beginning.
Addy and Lilianna Altobelli, from Chicago, were born joined at the chest and abdomen, sharing a liver, diaphragm, chest, and abdominal wall. Because of the complexity of their condition, they spent nearly their entire first year in intensive care as doctors carefully prepared for the operation that could change their lives.
At just 10 months old, the girls underwent a remarkable 10-hour separation surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. More than two dozen medical specialists worked together throughout the procedure, first separating the twins and then dividing into teams to reconstruct each child’s chest and abdomen.

Lead surgeon Dr. Holly Hedrick explained that every conjoined twin separation is unique, requiring months of planning and extraordinary teamwork.
“Every set of twins is different,” she said. “Our hope is that Addy and Lily have full, joyful lives.”
Doctors waited until the girls were strong enough for surgery and had developed enough healthy skin to safely complete the reconstruction. Their patience and careful planning paid off.
Seeing her daughters in their own bodies for the first time was an unforgettable moment for their mother.
“It was just indescribable,” she said.
Their father called Dr. Hedrick their “Wonder Woman,” praising the entire medical team for giving his daughters a future that once seemed impossible.
After more than a year in Philadelphia, the family finally returned home to Chicago. Following a short stay at a local children’s hospital to continue their recovery, Addy and Lilianna were discharged just before Christmas, where they were welcomed home by neighbors who decorated their yard to celebrate the girls’ incredible journey.

Today, Addy and Lilianna continue to recover surrounded by the love of their family—a powerful reminder of what hope, determination, and modern medicine can achieve.
