Coach Gene Stallings Says His Greatest Life Lessons Came From His Son John Mark

Today, the Stallings family is remembering John Mark Stallings on what would have been his 64th birthday — a day filled not only with grief, but also deep graтιтude for a life that touched countless people.

John Mark, affectionately known as Johnny, was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1962 to legendary football coach Gene Stallings and his wife, Ruth Ann. Born with Down syndrome, Johnny would go on to profoundly shape the values and perspective of everyone around him, especially his father.

Though Gene Stallings became nationally known for leading the University of Alabama to a national championship in 1992, the coach has often said the most important lessons of his life did not come from football.

They came from his son.

“Do the best you can do with what the Lord gave you,” Coach Stallings once said while reflecting on Johnny’s life. “Be kind to others and don’t complain. Love everybody.”

According to those closest to him, that simple philosophy perfectly described John Mark Stallings.

Friends and family remembered Johnny as someone who radiated kindness and warmth. He may never have been a famous athlete or celebrity, but to those who knew him, his impact was far greater than fame. His gentle spirit and ability to bring joy to others left lasting impressions wherever he went.

One of Coach Stallings’ favorite memories took place after Alabama defeated Miami in the 1993 Sugar Bowl to win the national championship. Exhausted after the emotional victory and hours of interviews, Coach Stallings boarded the team bus late that night and instructed staff to leave.

But the bus couldn’t go yet.

An ᴀssistant explained why:
“John Mark is in the middle of that crowd signing autographs.”

Even amid one of the biggest moments in Alabama football history, Johnny had become the center of attention — not because of celebrity, but because people simply loved him.

The family’s final moments together in 2008 remain especially heartbreaking.

On August 1st, John Mark was struggling to breathe as his oxygen levels dropped dangerously low. Despite his condition, when his father gently asked how he was feeling, Johnny quietly answered:
“I fine.”

The next morning, on August 2, 2008, John Mark Stallings pᴀssed away at the age of 46.

Coach Stallings later reflected that he would never complain again after witnessing the strength and positivity his son carried throughout life.

“Here was a man with Down syndrome who never complained, and he was kind to everyone,” he said. “That’s the biggest lesson I learned from my son.”

Today, Johnny rests near the family home in Paris, Texas, close to the people who continue loving and remembering him every day.

As friends, fans, and loved ones honor his heavenly birthday, many continue celebrating not only the life he lived, but the message he left behind:
Do the best you can with what you have. Love people. Be kind.

💔 John Mark Stallings may have left this world years ago, but the compᴀssion and joy he shared continue inspiring others long after his pᴀssing.
