Christian Brueckner Faces New Court Proceedings as Madeleine McCann Case Continues Without Charges

Christian Brueckner, the German national long regarded by investigators as the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, is scheduled to appear before a German appeals court in early 2027 in connection with a previous rape case. The hearing, set for January 11, 2027, in Leipzig, will review a 2024 acquittal that prosecutors successfully challenged.

Brueckner was cleared two years ago of aggravated rape and related offences. Prosecutors argued that the original verdict should not stand, and the court has ordered the matter to be reheard. He was released from prison in September 2025 after completing a seven-year sentence for the 2005 rape of an American woman in Portugal. Investigators who continue to focus on him in the Madeleine McCann inquiry view the upcoming proceedings as potentially significant, as a conviction could affect his legal position going forward.

Madeleine McCann, then aged three, vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on the evening of May 3, 2007, while her parents were dining nearby with friends. Brueckner has never been charged in connection with her disappearance and has consistently denied any involvement. Both German prosecutors and British detectives maintain that he remains the main person of interest.

Recent court appearance and fine (October 2026)

In mid-October 2026, Brueckner appeared in court in Oldenburg and was ordered to pay a €3,000 fine for verbally insulting a prison officer during an incident that took place in October 2023 while he was still serving his sentence. An earlier short prison term for the offence was replaced by the fine, which can be paid in daily instalments under German law. He avoided a return to custody.

At the same time, German prosecutors are also appealing his separate 2024 acquittal on multiple Sєxual offence charges linked to incidents in Portugal. The Federal Court of Justice is due to examine that appeal on the same January 2027 date. If the appeal succeeds, Brueckner could face a new trial on those counts.

Latest reported statement

According to a German media report published on October 22, 2026, Brueckner is said to have made a statement in which he acknowledged being in Praia da Luz on the night Madeleine disappeared. He reportedly claimed he was selling drugs on the beach, placing himself roughly 150 metres from the apartment complex. Investigators had previously established that his mobile phone was in a cell near the Ocean Club that evening. He had not previously given a detailed account of his movements that night.

Since his release, Brueckner has lived under continuous police surveillance in northern Germany and has publicly complained about the intensity of the monitoring. He has struggled to find stable housing and work.

Nearly 20 years after Madeleine’s disappearance, no charges have been filed against Brueckner in that case. The January 2027 court hearings will determine whether earlier acquittals are overturned and whether he faces further criminal proceedings on the Sєxual offence matters.
