New details are emerging about the first moments of the August 6 response at Kailey Erhart’s Mandan, North Dakota, home, where officers were called after receiving reports involving three young children.

According to court documents cited by local news outlets, officers arrived shortly after 5:40 p.m. and entered the residence. Investigators described a deeply disturbing scene, with officers finding Erhart inside and then following evidence through the home to locate the children.

The case quickly became a major investigation involving Mandan police, the Morton County Sheriff’s Office, the North Dakota Highway Patrol and state investigators.

Police Chief Jason Ziegler later described the situation as an extraordinarily difficult scene for the officers who responded.

Two of the children, ages five months and three years, did not survive. Their one-year-old sibling was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery. A later family update said the surviving child was expected to make a full physical recovery.

Erhart, 22, remains in custody and faces multiple charges, including two counts of murder, attempted murder and aggravated ᴀssault. She has not entered a plea, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 6.

The initial scene remains a central part of the investigation because investigators are working to reconstruct what happened before officers arrived and how the emergency unfolded inside the residence.

While some details have been made public through court documents, authorities have not released every piece of evidence from the investigation.

For now, the case remains active, with prosecutors and investigators continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the August 6 incident.
