Chilling New Details Emerge in Court: FedEx Driver Sang ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ While Brutally Murdering 7-Year-Old Athena Strand

In one of the most disturbing revelations from a Texas murder trial, former FedEx driver Tanner Horner was captured on surveillance audio singing the upbeat Christmas classic “Jingle Bell Rock” as he killed 7-year-old Athena Strand inside his delivery truck in late 2022.
The horrifying footage and audio were played in court on April 16, 2026, at the Tim Curry Criminal Justice Center in Fort Worth, leaving many jurors visibly emotional. According to reports from WFAA, the video began with Horner abducting the young girl from her driveway in the small town of Paradise, Texas. He was delivering a Christmas package to the home where Athena was staying with her father and stepmother at the time.
After forcing Athena into the back of the FedEx truck and closing the door, the girl could be heard asking in a frightened voice, “Where are you taking me?” Horner then reached over and covered the camera lens with something, but the audio recording continued to capture every sound. What followed was a nightmare that lasted for minutes. Athena begged for her mother, asked if he was a kidnapper, and was ordered to take off her shirt. The audio also included sounds of choking and indistinct banging inside the vehicle.

Approximately 30 minutes into the recording, the radio began playing “Jingle Bell Rock.” Horner started singing along to the festive tune while Athena screamed and moaned in severe pain. Instead of stopping, he coldly threatened the terrified child, saying, “Shut up. If you don’t shut up, I will hurt you worse.”
Athena Strand’s parents chose to leave the courtroom before the graphic video was shown, unable to bear hearing the final moments of their daughter’s life.
On April 7, 2026, Horner pleaded guilty to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping. The abduction occurred on November 30, 2022. Athena’s body was discovered two days later, approximately 9 miles from her home. A jury is now responsible for deciding Horner’s final punishment — whether he will face the death penalty or spend the rest of his life in prison without any possibility of parole.

Additional surveillance video from the day after the murder was also presented in court. It showed Horner driving through the very area where volunteers and law enforcement officers were desperately searching for Athena. He complained about being unable to pᴀss through the blocked road, then rolled down his window and spoke with a local woman. When she explained that the area was closed because “a 7-year-old was taken,” Horner repeatedly asked, “Are you serious?” in what appeared to be feigned surprise.
In a recorded jailhouse phone call with his mother that was played for the jury, Horner denied doing anything “weird” to Athena. His mother responded, “I didn’t think you did, I just know how you get.” In another part of the conversation, when asked if the girl “died on her own,” Horner replied simply, “No.”
Initially, Horner had told police he accidentally struck Athena with his truck and then strangled her in a panic. That story has now been contradicted by the overwhelming evidence presented in court, including the truck’s own surveillance system.

The trial is expected to last several more weeks as prosecutors continue presenting evidence of Horner’s actions before and after the murder. Two other women have also come forward, accusing Horner of Sєxually ᴀssaulting them when they were girls.
This case has gripped the nation due to its shocking brutality and the heartbreaking innocence of Athena Strand, a young girl taken from her family during what should have been a joyful holiday season. As the penalty phase continues, Athena’s family and the community continue to seek justice for the little girl whose life was so violently taken.
