A routine swim with friends at Coogee Beach, Sydney, reportedly turned into a terrifying emergency after witnesses say a 35-year-old woman was injured in a sudden shark encounter just offshore.

According to early accounts from bystanders, the group had been enjoying calm conditions when chaos erupted in the water. People on the beach described seeing frantic splashing and hearing screams as swimmers rushed back toward shore.

One witness, visibly shaken, said: “I thought I had lost my friend. Everything happened so fast—then lifeguards were running everywhere.”
