Born at just 24 weeks, baby Emsley survived life-threatening complications. Then, at age 2, her family received another life-changing diagnosis. đź’ś

When Mindy and Nate Alexander welcomed their daughter, Emsley, she weighed just over one pound. Born at only 24 weeks, she amazed her parents by breathing on her own despite arriving far too early.

But just three weeks later, their fragile hope was shattered.

Emsley developed necrotizing enterocolitis, a life-threatening intestinal disease that led to a severe infection and reduced oxygen to her developing brain. Doctors suspected brain injury, but for months there were few clear answers, leaving her parents uncertain about what the future would hold.

When Emsley was nearly 2 years old, what was expected to be a routine follow-up appointment brought unexpected news. After further testing, doctors confirmed she had cerebral palsy, a condition affecting movement caused by damage to the developing brain.

The diagnosis didn’t change everything overnight. Instead, her parents gradually learned to let go of expectations and celebrate every achievement—no matter how small.

Today, each new milestone is a victory. Whether it’s communicating through eye-tracking technology, giving a high five to answer “yes” or “no,” or simply making her opinions known to her brothers, every accomplishment is a reminder of how far she has come.

Rather than allowing Emsley’s condition to define their lives, her family has adopted one simple motto: “Do the dang thing.”

That means taking family trips, making memories, and finding ways to include Emsley in every adventure, even when it requires extra planning. Their goal isn’t perfection—it’s making sure she experiences life to the fullest.

Her parents describe Emsley as joyful, patient, and full of personality. They say her smile lights up every room, and despite the challenges she faces, she chooses happiness again and again.

Now, they share her story to encourage other families walking a similar path, reminding them that while the journey may be difficult, they are never alone.

For Mindy and Nate, the dream isn’t simply for Emsley to overcome obstacles—it’s for the world to see her for who she truly is: a little girl filled with courage, joy, and an incredible determination to live life on her own terms. ❤️
