When Paula Norris Welch gave birth to her daughter, Kayla, in May 2005, doctors already knew she faced an uphill battle. Born 14 weeks premature, Kayla had underdeveloped lungs, a hole in her heart, and required intensive medical care from the very beginning.

As she fought to grow stronger in the hospital, another disaster was about to unfold.

Just months after Kayla’s birth, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, forcing hospitals into emergency operations. Kayla remained in intensive care while medical teams worked tirelessly to protect their smallest patients amid the chaos.

Her parents were asked to leave the hospital before the storm made landfall, leaving them separated from their newborn daughter during one of the most frightening moments of their lives.

For two agonizing weeks, Paula could only rely on updates from nurses, who continued caring for the babies despite facing devastating losses in their own lives. Eventually, Kayla and the other critically ill infants were safely transferred to another hospital, where she continued receiving specialized treatment.

Despite every obstacle, Kayla kept fighting.

After finally leaving the hospital, she spent about a year using a home monitor that tracked her breathing and heart rate before gradually recovering.

Today, 20 years later, Kayla is healthy, thriving, and preparing to earn her college degree. Her mother says she has no lasting medical complications from her premature birth and continues to amaze everyone who knows her.

Looking back, Paula still becomes emotional remembering everything her daughter endured.

She calls Kayla her “miracle baby,” saying her survival through both a life-threatening birth and one of America’s most devastating natural disasters is something she will never stop being grateful for.
