BILL MAHER DROPS TRUTH: Red States Are Outperforming California

Bill Maher Drops Hard Truths: Red States Beating California on Education and Green Energy

Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher recently called out a uncomfortable reality on his HBO show Real Time: some red states are outperforming California on issues Democrats claim as their own.

“Did you know that a Black fourth grader in Mississippi is two and a half times as likely to be proficient in math and reading as one in California?” Maher asked. “Mississippi is kicking our ᴀss in education and for way less money.”

He also highlighted Texas’s success in renewable energy. “Texas is kicking our ᴀss in green energy. Texas has pᴀssed California in solar and blows away California when it comes to wind and energy storage.”

Maher pointed out the stark difference in bureaucracy: Texas can connect solar panels in just 3-4 months, while California’s red tape forced him to wait over 1,000 days for his own installation.

His blunt conclusion: “Democrats, these are your issues — education, race, the environment. And I say this with love: you’re losing to the Waffle House, car-on-the-lawn states.”

Results Over Rhetoric
Maher’s comments spotlight real data. Mississippi has made impressive gains in student proficiency through focused reading reforms, despite spending far less per pupil than California. Meanwhile, Texas has surged ahead in solar, wind, and battery storage thanks to faster permitting and a more business-friendly environment.

Even as a longtime liberal voice, Maher is acknowledging what numbers show: outcomes matter more than slogans or mᴀssive spending. While California struggles with declining test scores and regulatory delays, certain red states are delivering measurable progress on key priorities.

Maher’s message is simple — it’s time to focus on what actually works.
