BEYOND THE HOSPITAL ROOM — BRITTNEY FACES THE PAINFUL REALITY OF PAPERWORK AFTER WILL’S D*ATH
For Brittney Roberts, the hardest moments did not simply begin and end inside a hospital room.
After months of fighting alongside her son Will through his devastating cancer battle, she was suddenly confronted with another painful reality — the ordinary paperwork and practical responsibilities that follow the l*ss of a child.
The contrast can be especially difficult for grieving families. One moment, everything revolves around hospital visits, treatments, phone calls and hoping for more time. Then, after the l*ss, the focus shifts to documents, forms, belongings and decisions that can feel impossibly difficult to face.
Will, a 15-year-old from Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, had spent much of his final year battling stage 4 osteosarcoma. His story touched thousands after he used his mother Brittney’s Facebook account to make an emotional appeal for access to an experimental treatment.
Despite the seriousness of his illness, Will continued to be remembered for much more than his diagnosis. His family and those who knew him have spoken about his love of fishing, hunting, making people laugh, spending time with the people he loved and sharing his faith.
After his d*ath in July, those memories became even more important to the people closest to him.
For Brittney, however, grief has had to coexist with the practical responsibilities that cannot simply be put on hold. Everyday tasks can suddenly carry an entirely different emotional weight when they involve the name, belongings or records of someone who is no longer there.
It is a side of grief that is rarely visible in pH๏τographs or public tributes. Behind the memorials and messages of support are families trying to navigate paperwork while simultaneously processing an enormous l*ss.
Will’s story continues to live on through the people who loved him and the community that rallied around him. His family has repeatedly emphasized remembering the teenager for the life he lived — his personality, his faith, his humor and the impact he made — rather than allowing his illness to become the only story told about him.
And for Brittney, even the most routine piece of paperwork can now become another reminder of just how much has changed.
