Baby Girl Faces Rare Cancer After Birthmark Leads to Heartbreaking Diagnosis

Ten-month-old Macey-Mai from Plymouth, England, is courageously battling a rare form of cancer after doctors discovered that one of the lesions on her unusual birthmark had become malignant.

Born after a healthy pregnancy, Macey-Mai was diagnosed with giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN), a rare skin condition that causes large, dark birthmarks and increases the risk of developing melanoma. Her largest birthmark covers her entire back, while more than 100 smaller marks appear across her body.

When several painful, bleeding lesions began growing rapidly, doctors removed them for testing. After months of waiting, her family received devastating news in March 2026: one of the lesions was cancerous.

“I have never cried like that before,” her mother, Katelyn Clarke, said. “It’s the hardest battle of our lives.”

Macey-Mai continues to undergo close medical monitoring as doctors watch for signs that the cancer may spread. She is expected to need additional surgery and further treatment in the months ahead.

As her first birthday approaches, Katelyn says the family is determined to make it a joyful celebration despite the uncertainty.

“We want to give her the best birthday ever,” she said, hoping to create precious memories while her brave little girl continues her fight.
