Baby born without kidneys celebrates new beginning after receiving life-saving transplant from her mother

Little Emmie is bringing hope to thousands after reaching an incredible milestone—more than a month since receiving a life-saving kidney transplant donated by her own mother.
Her remarkable journey began before she was even born.
During her mother’s 20-week anatomy scan, doctors made a devastating discovery: Emmie’s kidneys had not developed.
Further testing confirmed that she had bilateral renal agenesis (BRA), a rare congenital condition in which both kidneys fail to form. The diagnosis is often considered life-threatening, and many babies with the condition do not survive.

Despite the overwhelming odds, Emmie was born alive and immediately began intensive medical care.
Because she had no functioning kidneys, she depended on dialysis to perform the essential work her body could not do on its own. For months, hospitals became a second home as doctors carefully monitored her condition and worked to keep her healthy enough for the next stage of treatment.
At six months old, Emmie began receiving care from a specialized pediatric nephrology and transplant team while continuing dialysis as she waited for the opportunity that could change her life.
That day finally arrived on July 25.
Emmie underwent a kidney transplant, receiving a healthy kidney donated by her mother, Andi.

The operation marked an extraordinary milestone for the family and represented a rare achievement for a child born without kidneys.
“She’s stronger than anyone could ever imagine,” a family member shared. “From the very beginning, Emmie never stopped fighting.”

For Andi, becoming her daughter’s donor was never a difficult choice.
“I would do it a thousand times over,” she said. “Seeing her smile now makes every challenge worth it.”
Although Emmie will continue to need ongoing medical care and close follow-up, the transplant has given her something her family once feared she might never have—a chance to grow up, create memories, and look forward to the future.
Today, more than a month after surgery, Emmie’s bright smile stands as a powerful reminder of the strength of a determined little girl, the love of a devoted mother, and the hope that modern medicine can bring.
