A Mother’s Choice: Carrying Her Daughter Through a Life-Limiting Diagnosis and Three Days of Precious Life
When Stefanie Wahl learned during her pregnancy that her unborn daughter faced a severe and life-limiting medical condition, she was confronted with one of the most difficult decisions a parent can experience.
At a 20-week ultrasound in Alberta, Canada, Stefanie and her husband, Adam Wahl, were informed that their baby had Trisomy 13, a rare and serious chromosomal disorder ᴀssociated with significant developmental and medical complications. Further testing confirmed a range of severe abnormalities, including brain malformations and heart defects.
Medical professionals explained that the prognosis was extremely poor. The couple was offered the option to terminate the pregnancy but chose instead to continue.
For Stefanie, the decision was rooted in a desire to meet her daughter and to give her life, regardless of its length. The couple named their baby girl Samantha Rose early in the pregnancy, choosing to acknowledge her as a member of their family from the moment of diagnosis.
As the pregnancy progressed, doctors prepared the family for the likelihood that Samantha might not survive delivery. Stefanie was induced at 36 weeks, and the birth was described as emotionally intense and medically uncertain.
Contrary to expectations, Samantha was born alive. Even more unexpectedly, she survived beyond the immediate hours following birth, continuing to live for three days.
Those three days became the center of the family’s world. Stefanie described them as both profoundly painful and deeply meaningful. During that time, Samantha was held constantly by her parents, surrounded by love, touch, and presence. Every moment was treated as precious and irreplaceable.
Family members focused on creating memories and ensuring comfort, fully aware that time was limited. Despite the medical challenges, those brief days became a period of intense connection and bonding.
After Samantha’s pᴀssing, her family found ways to continue honoring her life. Stefanie chose to donate breast milk to another newborn in need, an act she described as a way for part of Samantha’s legacy to continue helping another child.
She has also spoken about the ongoing emotional presence of her daughter in daily life, describing moments that remind her of Samantha and help her maintain a sense of connection.
Stefanie now shares her story publicly to support other parents facing similar diagnoses, emphasizing that love and grief are not opposites, but experiences that can exist side by side.
Samantha Rose’s life was brief, but her impact on her family remains lasting. Her story highlights the deeply personal nature of pregnancy decisions in the face of severe diagnoses and the profound emotional bonds formed even in the shortest spans of life.
“She mattered,” Stefanie said. “Every life matters, no matter how short.”
