When Maddicyn Brokenshire welcomed her son, Ollyver, in 2025, she knew life would be filled with challenges. Born with amniotic band syndrome (ABS), a rare condition that affected the development of his face and eyes, Ollyver has undergone multiple surgeries and is blind in one eye.

After seeing cruel comments online about her son, Maddicyn became terrified of taking him out in public. She worried strangers would stare, judge, or make hurtful remarks, leaving her feeling isolated during an already overwhelming time.

But when she finally stepped outside with Ollyver, she discovered something she never expected.

Instead of criticism, she found compᴀssion.

Other parents welcomed her, checked in after her son’s surgeries, donated clothes, and reminded her that she wasn’t facing the journey alone. A local beauty salon even became a safe place where she could openly share Ollyver’s story, rebuild her confidence, and find the strength to advocate for her son.

Despite everything he has endured, Ollyver is a cheerful, energetic baby who lights up every room with his smile. His mother says people quickly see beyond his appearance and simply see a happy little boy.

Getting to that point wasn’t easy.

Before becoming pregnant with Ollyver, Maddicyn experienced two heartbreaking miscarriages. During this pregnancy, she faced severe complications, including a subchorionic hemorrhage and pre-eclampsia. Doctors even advised ending the pregnancy because of the serious risks, but Maddicyn chose to continue, determined to give her son every possible chance.

When Ollyver was born, he needed 11 minutes of lifesaving resuscitation before doctors could stabilize him. Since then, he has undergone several surgeries to improve the function of his face and eye, with more procedures planned as he grows.

Today, his stronger eye has functional vision, while his other eye remains blind and may eventually require a prosthetic. Even so, his parents say he continues to surprise them with his resilience and joyful spirit.

Now, Maddicyn shares Ollyver’s journey to encourage other families facing similar challenges, reminding them that they are never alone.

“Trust your instincts. You know your baby best,” she says.

Through every surgery, setback, and milestone, Ollyver continues to prove that his life is defined not by his condition, but by his courage, happiness, and the unwavering love surrounding him.
