Family members and later her father Adam Ghekiere said police confirmed she was the one who placed the 911 call that brought emergency crews to the scene shortly after 6:10 p.m. Relatives and a family friend authorized to speak publicly have called her the hero of the night.

She tried to save the family. She did not survive. Charlotte was one of four children killed along with four adults in the attack that also left the house in flames. The others were her brother Landon, 15; her step-siblings Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7; their mother Megan Ireland-Ghekiere, 39; Megan’s parents Dana and Barbara Smith; and 92-year-old great-grandmother Evelyn Smith. The shooter, Alan Smith, 44, Megan’s brother, died by suicide after confronting responding officers. Charlotte had not been expected at the house that Sunday. Charlotte’s call is now part of the official timeline: neighbors first thought they heard fireworks around 6 p.m.; two minutes later the emergency line rang; officers confronted a man in the front yard who retreated inside; more gunfire and smoke followed; a final sH๏τ was heard at 6:13 p.m.; the suspect was found in the backyard minutes later. For the surviving parents the knowledge that a 12-year-old tried to get help while the shooting was still happening is both a source of pride and an almost unbearable detail. Adam Ghekiere has said his last words to his children were “I love you.” Erica Schneider, Landon and Charlotte’s mother, later posted that she wanted to honor the slain kids. The community planned a candlelight vigil. Fundraisers exceeded six figures. The girl who loved insects and made a desperate call from inside a house that would soon be on fire is the image many people cannot shake. She did what she could.
