Selena Gomez revealed that she took Spanish lessons for six months to help her better prepare for her role in Netflix’s Emilia Perez.
The Wolves singer, 32 – who recently opened up about her boyfriend Benny Blanco and mental health – discussed the musical thriller during an appearance on NPR’s Fresh Air on Tuesday.
Emilia Perez – which has left fans drastically divided – dropped on the streaming site earlier this month on November 13.
Gomez explained that although she grew up speaking Spanish at home, she later lost the fluency of the language after moving to Los Angeles to purse her career in entertainment.
‘I got my first job at 7, and most of my jobs from that point on were English,’ she said during the episode.
‘And I just lost [my Spanish]. That’s kind of the case for a lot of people, especially Mexican American people,’ she explained.

The star added, ‘I wish I just knew a lot more than I do. But I think that’s why I try to honor my culture as much as possible.’
‘From releasing an album in Spanish to wanting to pursue this movie. And I don’t think it’ll be the last thing I do in Spanish,’ Selena expressed.

Gomez later stated that taking on the role of Jessie – a cartel leader’s wife – helped rekindle her pᴀssion for music.
While talking about one of the songs in the film тιтled, Mi Camino, the Rare Beauty founder explained, ‘It was one of the most emotional songs that I got to record during the process of shooting this movie.’
‘And I remember just singing it and thinking to myself: This could have been my song.’
The former Disney channel star added, ‘And this could have been a song on an album I would put out personally because it’s so well said and it feels very true to who I am, to where I am.’
Along with Gomez, other stars that were cast in the musical crime comedy include Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon, Edgar Ramirez and Adriana Paz.
The premise is: ‘In Mexico, a lawyer receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of being,’ per IMDB.

In August, the musical crime comedy was released in theaters in France – and released on Netflix last week.
The movie was also selected as the French entry for Best International Feature Film for the upcoming 97th Academy Awards.
Selena has previously opened up about Emilia Perez and her role – and during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last month in September, she talked about the bond she shares with her fellow castmates.
‘I’m so grateful to have women around me that lift me up in every way. And yes, I have a special connection with these women.’
She added, ‘I feel so grateful that I get to go on this journey with them. We’re also happy for each other and we cheer each other on, and I love that. That can be rare.’

On Reddit, some Netflix viewers shared their thoughts on the project shortly after it was released on the streaming site.
One stated it is ‘Insanely offensive, yes (it manages to windmill slam on every single bad trans movie trope, and that’s even before you get into the Mexican culture aspect of it all).’
‘But frankly, the worst part of it was how incredibly boring everything was.’
Another also typed out, ‘I’m honestly baffled that this movie has gotten any love at all.’
However, others disagreed with the negative feedback, with one sharing that the movie was ‘a true spectacle in every sense.’
‘Emilia Perez is a symphony of emotions, a wildly-original and poignant musical that explores complex and provocative ideas through powerful storytelling.’
Selena has been keeping busy, and recently attended the SAG-AFTRA Foundations event for Emilia Perez on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
The actress also sat down with The Hollywood Reporter in an article published this week, and discussed her budding romance with record producer, Benny Blanco – whom she began dating last year.

Gomez talked about how focusing more on her acting career rather than music has given her ‘sanity’; seen earlier this month in Hollywood
‘This is the safest I’ve ever felt in [a relationship], and I see a future with this person. And when you put a little bit out there, people are not as hungry to hunt you down.’
The singer then explained that there are aspects of their relationship that fans ‘don’t see’ as the couple keep their romance mainly out of the public eye.
Gomez talked about how focusing more on her acting career rather than music has given her ‘sanity.’
‘It’s really scary to talk about music that maybe has been a part of your story and isn’t anymore. And it’s really hard to sit there and talk about myself. It’s draining.’
While doing press for Emilia Perez, she told THR that she has not been asked a ‘personal question’ once.
‘Every interview I’ve done for this movie, there’s not been one personal question asked.’
‘And I’ve wanted to kiss every single reporter in the mouth and just say, “Thank you” because it’s been so refreshing, and I think that that’s a space that is safer for me.’
