Smiling Through Scars: 3-Year-Old Emmy’s Courageous Recovery After 3 Surgeries and a Serious IV Complication

A Brave Smile: Emmy’s Journey to Healing
A family’s relief after their toddler’s successful open-heart surgery was tragically cut short by a preventable hospital error. But today, three-year-old Emmy Gunther is proving that even the tiniest fighters have the strongest spirits.
When Jalena Gunther brought her three-year-old daughter, Emmy, to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton for open-heart surgery this past January, she braced herself for the hardest days of her life. Miraculously, Emmy’s little heart pulled through beautifully. However, the true nightmare began not in the operating room, but during what should have been a routine recovery.
The Unthinkable Complication
During her postoperative care, the IV line administering vital fluids to Emmy became dislodged from her vein—a medical complication known as an intersтιтial IV. Instead of entering her bloodstream, the fluid began pooling directly beneath the skin of her small hand.
Despite the toddler crying out in pain throughout the entire night, the family alleges that no medical staff checked the IV site. By the following morning, the damage was severe. Emmy’s hand was dangerously swollen, discolored, and the tissue had begun to rapidly deteriorate.
What was supposed to be a heart recovery mission suddenly turned into a desperate fight to save the little girl’s hand.
A Grueling Road to Repair
Instead of going home to celebrate her newly healed heart, little Emmy was forced to spend an agonizing 20 extra days in the hospital. She had to endure three additional, entirely unexpected surgeries to repair the severe damage caused by the leaking IV.
The final and most intensive procedure required a skin graft, taking healthy tissue from her thigh to help rebuild her injured hand. It was a heartbreaking ordeal for a child who had already been through so much.
“Her heart is healing well, her hand is healing well,” her mother, Jalena, shared with a mixture of exhaustion and profound relief.
The Demand for Accountability and Change
Emmy’s story has since captured national attention, sparking vital conversations about hospital protocols, patient advocacy, and the crucial need for consistent monitoring. Alberta Health Services (AHS) has publicly confirmed that standard protocol dictates IVs should be checked every single hour.
An official review into Emmy’s care is currently underway. AHS spokesperson Kirsten Goruk stated that the investigation will take time to ensure a thorough understanding of what went wrong and to implement necessary safety recommendations.
While the hospital has stepped forward to take responsibility and apologize for the error that caused the injury, Jalena is looking for more than just words.

Seeking True Reform: “We want to see real change happen and we want to see what happens to the staff involved,” Jalena stated. “We’re trying to trust the process, but it’s definitely hard… we’re still very much in limbo right now.”
Returning to the Joys of Childhood
Despite the dark shadows of the past month, the sun is finally shining again for the Gunther family. This past Sunday, Emmy was officially discharged. As she walked out of the hospital doors, the brave toddler was completely entirely full of smiles.
While she bears the red scars of her journey and faces a long, rigorous road of physiotherapy, her progress is nothing short of inspiring. The main medical focus now is ensuring she regains a full range of motion. She cannot yet make a fist, but she is reaching incredible new milestones every day.
Emmy’s Triumphs at Home:
-
Regaining Dexterity: She is wiggling her fingers and recently started using her hand to pick up her favorite goldfish crackers to feed herself—a mᴀssive victory considering she couldn’t hold anything just days prior.
-
Finding Comfort: Arriving home was emotional, but Emmy quickly settled back into her safe space.
-
Pure Joy: She is already back to dancing, playing, raiding the cupboards for snacks, and asking for her absolute favorite thing: bath time.
Emmy’s incredible resilience is a powerful reminder of the strength of children. While her family continues to fight for accountability to ensure no other child endures this pain, they are finally able to focus on what matters most: watching their beautiful, brave little girl smile again.
