Star Wars movie trilogy in the works from X-Men writer-producer Simon Kinberg

Five years after the last Star Wars movie hit the big screen, Disney and LucasFilm are ready to return to that beloved galaxy far, far away.

Disney has set writer and producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool) to write and produce a new Star Wars trilogy, according to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline.

That report featured sources claiming that this trilogy will comprise Episodes 10-12 of the flagship Skywalker Saga that dates back to the original 1977 Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

However others have disputed that, insisting it will begin a new saga of Star Wars lore, though LucasFilm and Disney would not comment.

Kinberg confirmed the news by sharing a pH๏τo of the ᴅᴇᴀᴅline article with the caption, ‘A long time ago in a galaxy not so far away, I was a little kid who wanted to tell stories because I saw a movie called Star Wars…..’

While Disney has been active in producing Star Wars content for its Disney Plus streaming service, there hasn’t been a big screen film since 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.

The studio had set a brand new film trilogy from Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi writer and producer Rian Johnson, though there has been little known about that project since it was announced in 2017.

LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in April 2023 the project was still in active development, though that may no longer be the case.

Many believe that it is no longer in development, especially with the news that Johnson and his producing partner Ram Bergman signed a two-picture deal with Warner Bros. back in March.

The next Star Wars movie to hit the big screen will be The Mandalorian & Grogu, slated for release on May 22, 2026, which continues The Mandalorian TV series starring Pedro Pascal as the тιтle character.

Disney and LucasFilm are also developing three more unтιтled films, which are set in different eras of the franchise, which were all announced in April 2023.

The first is from writer-director James Mangold and co-writer Beau Willimon that is set during, ‘the dawn of the Jedi.’

The second hails from The Mandalorian and Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni, set between the original and sequel trilogies during the New Republic era.
