The Kansas City are fresh off a 28-18 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. After the Super Bowl rematch, the Chiefs advanced to 6-0 on the season, becoming the only team in the NFL to have an undefeated record.
While the Chiefs are thriving, their offense could use some major help. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and company have been struggling all year.
Kansas City is currently averaging 24.3 points per game. So far this season, Mahomes, widely viewed as the top quarterback in the NFL, has recorded more interceptions than touchdowns.
After the Week 7 win over the 49ers, Mahomes’ season totals moved to six touchdowns and 1,389 yards with a 67.9 completion percentage. He’s also recorded eight interceptions on the year, throwing at least one pick in each game played this season.
Much of these struggles stem from Mahomes’ limited help at wide receiver. His No. 1 wide receiver, Rashee Rice, has been ruled out for the season after recently having knee surgery.
Since Rice’s injury against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4, the Chiefs have been searching for a top receiver.
Kansas City’s current wide receiver room consists of Mecole Hardman, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Skyy Moore and Justin Watson.
Given the struggles, a recent trade idea linked Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Christian Kirk with the Chiefs.
CBS Sports writer Cody Benjamin listed Kirk as a trade candidate for the Chiefs, mentioning that his play style could fit well in Kansas City.
“His history working out of the slot suggests he’d be a perfect multipurpose option for Reid’s offense, giving Kansas City a more sure-handed catch-and-run threat,” mentioned Benjamin.
So far this season, Kirk has produced one touchdown on 25 receptions and 320 yards. He’s currently playing in his third season in Jacksonville after starting his career with the Arizona Cardinals.
Kirk’s best NFL season came in his first year with the Jaguars, 2022, when he posted eight touchdowns on 84 receptions and 1,108 yards, the only 1,000-yard season of his career.
Kirk signed a free-agent deal with Jacksonville in 2022. In terms of base salary, he’s set to earn $14.5 million in 2024 and $15.5 million in 2025.
Once his four-year, $72 million contract comes to an end, Kirk will be an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
