PART 2: THE RECORDING THAT DESTROYED HIS EMPIRE

Julian Vance had always believed money could solve every problem.
A phone call could silence a journalist. A generous donation could make a scandal disappear. And a carefully worded statement could convince the world that he was the victim.
But this time, he had made one mistake.
He had left me alive.
And I remembered everything.
THE FIRST WARNING
“Nora, sweetheart, how are you feeling?”
Julian placed the white roses on the bedside table and approached me with a carefully rehearsed expression of concern.
I didn’t answer.
He leaned forward, attempting to kiss my forehead.
Dr. Caleb Reed immediately stepped between us.
“Mr. Vance, I told you that she needs rest.”
Julian’s jaw тιԍнтened.
“I’m her husband. I have every right to see her.”
“Not if your presence causes her distress.”
For the first time, Julian looked directly at me.
“Nora, tell him you’re fine.”
I slowly turned my head toward him.
My throat was dry, and every word hurt.
“Get… away.”
His expression changed.
Only for a second, but I saw it.
The irritation.
The same expression he had worn when he stepped over my bleeding body to comfort Selena.
He lowered his voice.
“Don’t start this, Nora. You’re confused. You’ve been through a terrible experience.”
I stared at him.
“You stabbed me.”
Silence.
Dr. Reed’s face hardened.
Julian glanced toward the door before looking back at me.
“You slipped. There was an accident.”
I almost laughed, but the movement sent pain through my abdomen.
“An accident?”
He leaned closer.
“Listen carefully. You were upset. Selena came over, there was an argument, and somehow you got injured. That’s all anyone needs to know.”
I looked at the man who had once promised to protect me for the rest of my life.
“You want me to lie?”
“I want you to think about your children.”
His eyes briefly moved toward the ultrasound pH๏τograph.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“If you cooperate, we can still raise them together.”
Dr. Reed immediately pressed the emergency call ʙuттon.
“Mr. Vance, your visit is over.”
Julian straightened his jacket.
At the door, he turned around.
“Think about what you’re doing, Nora. You don’t want to make an enemy of me.”
I waited until the door closed.
Then I looked at Dr. Reed.
“Did you hear that?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
I swallowed.
“Good. Because I want the police.”
THE RECORDING
Twenty minutes later, Detective Maria Collins entered my hospital room.
She was in her early forties, with tired eyes and a small notebook in her hand.
“I understand you have something important to tell us.”
I nodded toward my smartwatch.
“My husband thinks I’m ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.”
Detective Collins pulled a chair beside my bed.
“Can you explain?”
I told her about Selena’s arrival, the accusation, the knife, and the two stabs.
Then I explained how I had activated the voice recorder while lying beneath my own body weight.
When I finished, Detective Collins looked at my smartwatch.
“Do you still have the recording?”
I nodded.
“It’s saved.”
She called a digital evidence specialist.
A few minutes later, the technician carefully connected the device to a secured forensic system.
The recording began.
First, there was the sound of my body hitting the floor.
Then Julian’s voice.
“She’s gone.”
A few seconds pᴀssed.
Then Selena spoke.
“Are you sure?”
Julian answered without hesitation.
“I did it, Selena. Just like you said.”
The detective stopped writing.
Selena’s voice became clearer.
“What about the knife?”
“I’ll take care of it.”
“And the cameras?”
“I already had the security system disconnected.”
Then came the sentence that made everyone in the room go silent.
Selena laughed softly.
“Finally. No more Nora. Once the twins are gone, there’s nothing left connecting us.”
Julian responded:
“Don’t worry. By Monday, everyone will believe she was unstable. Her family will never get the truth.”
Detective Collins slowly looked at me.
“Mrs. Vance, this recording could be extremely important evidence.”
I closed my eyes.
There was no relief.
Only a terrible realization.
Selena hadn’t simply wanted my husband.
She had wanted me gone.
And Julian had been willing to make that happen.
SELENA’S BIGGEST MISTAKE
At 8:30 the following morning, Selena arrived at the hospital.
She wore a cream-colored designer coat and carried an enormous bouquet of pink roses.
Her expression was almost perfect.
Almost.
“Oh, Nora,” she whispered when she entered. “I was so worried about you.”
I looked at her without speaking.
She placed the flowers beside Julian’s roses.
“I hope you recover quickly. Julian has been devastated.”
I almost smiled.
“Has he?”
Selena pulled a chair closer.
“Of course. He hasn’t slept properly in days.”
Then she leaned toward me.
Her voice dropped.
“Listen, Nora. We both know what happened. You should stop making things difficult for Julian.”
I watched her carefully.
“What do you want?”
She glanced toward the door.
“Your husband has a company to protect. His reputation matters. If you tell the police something different from what we agreed, you’ll destroy everything.”
I slowly moved my hand beneath the blanket.
My smartwatch was gone, but a small hospital recording device had been placed near the bedside table at Detective Collins’s request.
Selena continued.
“Besides, who would believe you? You’re a housewife with no career, no influence, and no money of your own.”
I looked directly into her eyes.
“You seem very confident.”
She smiled.
“Because Julian loves me. He always has.”
Then she made the mistake that would change everything.
She reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
“Sign this.”
I looked at it.
“What is it?”
“A statement saying your injuries were caused by an accidental fall. Julian’s lawyers prepared it. Once you sign, everyone can move on.”
I stared at the document.
It was already filled out.
My name was printed at the bottom.
All I had to do was sign.
I looked back at Selena.
“And if I refuse?”
Her smile disappeared.
“Then I suppose you’ll have to explain why you attacked me.”
I let the silence stretch.
Then I whispered:
“Selena, do you remember what Julian said when he thought I was ᴅᴇᴀᴅ?”
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“What are you talking about?”
I held her gaze.
“He said he did it because you asked him to.”
For the first time, Selena looked frightened.
She stood up so quickly that her handbag fell against the chair.
“You’re lying.”
I didn’t answer.
She grabbed the envelope.
“Don’t you dare ruin my life!”
The door opened.
Detective Collins stepped inside with two uniformed officers.
“Miss Cole, I think we’d like to hear more about your conversation.”
Selena went completely still.
JULIAN DISCOVERS THE TRUTH
By noon, Julian was sitting in his corporate office when his attorney called.
“Julian, where are you?”
“Office. Why?”
“Don’t speak to anyone about the incident at your house.”
Julian frowned.
“What incident?”
“Your wife has provided evidence to the police.”
His fingers тιԍнтened around his phone.
“What evidence?”
There was a pause.
“An audio recording.”
Julian stood up.
“What?”
“Your conversation with Selena. Apparently, she also visited Nora this morning.”
His face turned pale.
“That’s impossible. Nora was unconscious.”
“She recovered, Julian.”
He looked toward the window.
For three days, he had told himself that I wouldn’t remember anything.
He had even arranged for a doctor to prepare a statement suggesting that my injuries could have resulted from an accidental fall.
Now everything was collapsing.
“Get me Selena,” he demanded.
“She’s being questioned.”
Julian slammed his phone onto the desk.
Then another notification appeared.
An email from his company’s board of directors.
URGENT: EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING — 3:00 P.M.
The message contained only one additional sentence:
Your position as chief executive officer will be reviewed pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
Julian sank into his chair.
For the first time in his career, he couldn’t make a phone call that would fix everything.
THE SECRET ABOUT THE TWINS
That afternoon, Dr. Reed returned to my room.
He checked my blood pressure, reviewed my latest test results, and pulled a chair beside my bed.
“How are you feeling?”
“Still in pain.”
“That is understandable. You’ve been through major abdominal trauma.”
I looked toward the ultrasound pH๏τograph.
“Are my babies going to be okay?”
He paused.
That pause frightened me more than anything else.
“Both babies are showing encouraging signs,” he said carefully. “But your injuries were serious, and we’ll need to monitor the pregnancy very closely.”
I covered my mouth.
He gently placed a hand over the medical chart.
“Listen to me, Nora. You and your children have made it through an extremely difficult situation. We’re going to do everything we can to keep you safe.”
Tears slipped down my cheeks.
I had spent months imagining Julian holding our twins.
I had imagined him decorating their nursery, choosing their names, and standing beside me when they took their first breaths.
Now I couldn’t even imagine letting him near them.
“Doctor?”
“Yes?”
“Can he ever be allowed to see them?”
Dr. Reed looked at me seriously.
“That will depend on the legal situation and the appropriate custody arrangements. But you do not have to make that decision today.”
I nodded.
For the first time, I understood something.
Being their mother meant protecting them, even if that meant protecting them from their own father.
THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
At 6:45 p.m., Detective Collins returned.
She carried a thin folder.
“We’ve made progress.”
I sat up slightly.
“Selena?”
“She has been taken into custody for questioning. We’re also reviewing evidence from your home, including the security system records.”
I remembered Julian saying he had disconnected the cameras.
“What did you find?”
“The system was disabled, but one exterior camera continued transmitting to a separate backup server.”
My heart began racing.
“What did it capture?”
Detective Collins opened the folder.
“Your husband arriving home earlier than expected. Selena entering approximately twelve minutes later. And something else.”
She turned a pH๏τograph toward me.
It showed Julian standing beside his car outside the house.
He was holding a small black case.
I frowned.
“What is that?”
“We’re investigating. But the timestamp is important. He arrived with it before Selena came inside.”
I looked at the pH๏τograph again.
Then I remembered something.
On the afternoon of the attack, Julian had told me he was going to a business meeting.
He hadn’t mentioned coming home.
“Detective, I think there’s something you should know.”
“What is it?”
“Julian told me he had been traveling for work. But I found a H๏τel receipt in his jacket last week. It was for a room booked under Selena’s name.”
Detective Collins wrote something down.
“Do you still have it?”
“No. I threw it away.”
“That’s okay. We’ll look into it.”
She closed the folder.
Then her expression became unusually serious.
“Nora, there’s one more thing. We’ve discovered that the incident at your house may not have been the first time someone attempted to harm you.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
She placed another pH๏τograph on the blanket.
It showed my car parked outside a shopping center.
The front tire was visibly damaged.
I remembered that afternoon.
I had nearly lost control of the car on the highway, but Julian had dismissed it as an ordinary mechanical failure.
Detective Collins leaned forward.
“We’re investigating whether that incident was deliberate.”
My stomach тιԍнтened.
“Are you saying someone tried to hurt me before?”
“We’re not drawing conclusions yet.”
She stood up.
“Get some rest. We’ll speak again tomorrow.”
But after she left, I couldn’t sleep.
Because suddenly, the two stabs weren’t the only thing frightening me.
I began wondering how long Julian and Selena had been planning to get rid of me.
And whether my babies had been in danger long before that afternoon.
At 10:17 p.m., my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then a text appeared.
Nora, my name is Michael Grant. I worked as Julian’s personal ᴀssistant for four years. I have something you need to see. It concerns Selena, your husband, and the night you were attacked.
A second message followed.
But please don’t tell the police yet. There’s someone inside Julian’s company who knows you’re alive.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
And Nora, your husband wasn’t supposed to kill you that afternoon. The original plan was much worse.
My blood ran cold.
I immediately called Detective Collins.
But before she could answer, Michael sent one final message.
Check your old email account. I’ve just sent you the file Julian thought he had destroyed.
I opened my inbox.
There was an attachment.
The subject line read:
PROJECT: NORA — FINAL PLAN.
And beneath it was a date.
Six weeks before Julian stabbed me.
I opened the document.
The first paragraph contained my full name, my home address, and a detailed description of my daily routine.
But the final line made my hands tremble.
The twins must never be born.
I dropped the phone onto the blanket.
Julian hadn’t simply lost control because Selena had a scratch on her arm.
That scratch had been an excuse.
And whatever they had planned for me was far more terrifying than I had imagined.
