PART 2 — THE GRAVE WITHOUT A BODY… AND THE BLOODLINE CONSPIRACY! 😱⚡
The world spun violently as Emily stared through the drifting smoke.
The jawline, the piercing dark eyes, the crooked scar along the left cheek—it was him. The very man she had seen suspended from the gallows with a burlap hood pulled over his head while the entire town jeered.
“Jonathan…?” Emily’s voice cracked, barely a whisper over the shrill whinnying of the horses. “You’re alive…?”
“Keep your head down, Emily!” Gabriel bellowed.
With a roar that shook the wagon timber, the mountain giant whipped his heavy bearskin coat over her, pulled a lever-action Winchester from the scabbard, and fired two deafening rounds into the brush. A rider to the right cried out, tumbling backward into the frozen brambles as his horse bolted into the darkness.
The man who looked like Jonathan didn’t flinch. He raised his silver-plated revolver, sneering with a cruel malice her gentle husband had never possessed.
“Always interfering, Blackwell!” the rider shouted, his voice smooth, mocking, and completely devoid of warmth. “You should have stayed beyond the northern ridge. Hand the girl over! Whitlock’s buyers are waiting at the border, and she’s worth ten thousand dollars in uncut silver bullion!”
“Over my ᴅᴇᴀᴅ body, Julian!” Gabriel roared back, racking another cartridge into the chamber.
Julian? Emily clung to the side of the buckboard, her chest heaving in agony. “Gabriel! Who is that man?!”
“That is Julian Dawson—Jonathan’s identical twin brother!” Gabriel shouted, grabbing the reins with one hand while keeping his rifle leveled at the line of pine trees. “The man who took Jonathan’s place in the ledger, and the bastard who helped Whitlock frame his own flesh and blood!”
“Then who did they hang?!” Emily sobbed, terror seizing her throat. “I stood in the town square! I saw the trapdoor drop!”
“They hanged a vagrant drugging out his final days, hooded so no one could see his face!” Gabriel hissed, snapping the reins to send the team into a desperate gallop down the narrow mountain trail. “Jonathan wasn’t hanged, Emily. Four months ago, Whitlock and his brother locked Jonathan deep inside the abandoned salt mines at Black Ridge to force him to decode the railway’s vault combinations!”
Bullets tore through the wooden canopy above them, raining splinters into the cold wind. Gabriel steered the surging wagon around a sharp cliffside curve, temporarily breaking the riders’ line of sight behind a colossal wall of granite.
He pulled the horses into a hidden cavern half-swallowed by pine needles and heavy snowdrifts.
“Out, now!” Gabriel ordered, practically lifting Emily from the seat and pushing her into the dark, rocky recess just as hoofbeats thundered past on the main road below.
Inside the cavern, away from the howling wind, a single oil lantern sat atop a flat boulder. Beside it lay an old iron chest, its lid thrown open to reveal stacks of legal papers, mining maps, and a child’s woolen blanket embroidered with the initials E.D.
Emily fell against the stone wall, her trembling hands clutching the folded pH๏τograph from the watch.
“The woman in the picture with Julian and the mayor…” Emily stammered, looking up at Gabriel with wide, desperate eyes. “She has my face. She has my eyes. If I never gave birth to that baby… who is she?!”
Gabriel set his rifle down, his scarred, rugged face etched with profound sorrow. He picked up an official document from the iron chest and handed it to her.
“Her name was Sarah Vance. Your twin sister, separated from you in an orphanage in Boston twenty years ago,” Gabriel said quietly, his deep voice heavy with the truth. “Sarah married Whitlock. Two years ago, when she discovered that Whitlock and Julian were using the rail lines to launder stolen government silver, they silenced her… and took the child.”
Emily’s knees buckled. “My sister… they killed my sister?”
“They made it look like childbed fever,” Gabriel said. “And the baby in that pH๏τograph, Emily… that little girl is the legal sole heir to the largest silver vein in the Wyoming Territory. Under territorial law, if the mother is ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, custody and the mine deeds default to the mother’s direct living bloodline.”
Gabriel stepped closer, his dark eyes burning with intensity.
“The mayor didn’t throw you out of town to punish you for being a thief’s widow, Emily. He starved you and drove you into the wilderness so you would die of exposure in the snow—leaving him as the girl’s sole legal guardian!”
Before Emily could process the horror of his words, a cold, metallic click sounded from the shadowed corridor deep within the cavern.
Someone stepped out from the darkness behind them.
It wasn’t Julian.
It wasn’t Mayor Whitlock.
It was a man clad in filthy prisoner’s rags, his wrists raw and bloody from iron shackles, holding a cocked derringer pointed straight at Gabriel’s heart.
The man’s face was gaunt, his ribs visible beneath a tattered shirt, but Emily knew those kind, broken eyes the instant they met hers.
“Jonathan…” she cried, taking a step forward.
“Stay back, Emily!” the emaciated man rasped, his hand shaking violently as he kept the gun trained on Gabriel. “Don’t trust him! The mountain man isn’t trying to save you… HE WAS THE ONE WHO DREW UP THE CONTRACT TO SELL OUR DAUGHTER TO THE MAYOR!”
