PART 2 — THE COLD CAGE OF CROWNS… AND A BROTHER’S BLOOD OATH! 😱⚡
The scream tore right through Daniel’s chest, ripping open three years of scar tissue and buried grief.
“GRACE!”
Daniel lunged forward into the knee-deep snow, but the pregnant woman clamped both hands onto his coat, pulling him back against the wooden wheel of the wagon.
“Don’t run into the open, Daniel! That’s what they want!” she cried through clenched teeth, her body trembling from labor pains and the biting frost. “They didn’t come to talk—they brought her to break you!”
On the ridge above, the leader of the riders raised a silver-plated Winchester. A gold ring on his glove glinted in the torchlight—engraved with the same black crown and three stars Oliver had carved in the snow.
“Well, well… the broken wolf still has teeth,” the rider’s voice boomed over the shrieking wind. He lowered his bandana, revealing the scarred, aristocratic face of Julian Vance, the ruthless territory baron. “Step away from that wagon, Daniel Harrison. Hand over Marcus’s woman and the boy, and I might just let you bury your daughter in one piece this time.”
Daniel’s blood turned to boiling acid. “My brother Marcus… is he alive?!”
Vance laughed, a sharp, cruel sound. “Marcus thought he could play hero. He stole the ledger containing every land deed and bribe this syndicate owns, and he had the nerve to entrust it to that mute brat of his! Marcus bled out three nights ago in a canyon cell. You’re looking at the end of the line, Harrison.”
Grace cried out again from the saddle, struggling against the iron grip of the man holding her. “Daddy! The pocket watch! Tell them Papa Marcus hid the key—”
A rough hand clamped over the little girl’s mouth, cutting off her words.
“Get the children behind the iron stove!” Daniel roared to the oldest girl inside the wagon. He snatched his repeating rifle from beneath the seat, levering a cartridge with a deafening CLACK. “Stay down and keep your mother warm!”
BANG!
A bullet tore through the wagon canopy just inches above Daniel’s shoulder.
Daniel dropped to one knee, firing twice into the driving snow. His first sH๏τ struck the torch from a rider’s hand; his second tore through the chest of the gunman holding Grace’s reins. The man tumbled off his horse into the drifts, and Grace’s mount panicked, bolting sideways into the dense pine thicket away from the crossfire.
“After the girl! Don’t let her reach the ravine!” Vance shouted, firing wildly into the snowbank shielding Daniel.
Taking advantage of the blinding whiteout, Daniel hoisted the pregnant widow and her terrified children into the sheltered hollow beneath a collapsed rock overhang twenty paces behind the wagon.
“Stay here,” Daniel panted, his chest heaving as steam billowed from his lips. He turned to leave, his eyes fixed on the dark pines where Grace’s horse had vanished.
“Daniel, wait!”
It was Oliver. The young boy caught Daniel’s sleeve again, his pale face solemn and eerily calm amidst the gunfire.
With small, numb fingers, Oliver pressed the gold pocket watch into Daniel’s scarred palm, then twisted the winding stem three times backward.
CLICK.
A false backplate popped open, revealing not gears or cogs, but a tiny glᴀss vial filled with a dark, shimmering liquid—and a folded slip of parchment sealed with wax.
“Papa Marcus told me,” Oliver whispered, his blue eyes staring directly into Daniel’s soul. “He said you gave your daughter a sleeping draught three years ago, thinking it was fever medicine. But it wasn’t medicine, Uncle Daniel.”
The boy pointed at the vial.
“It was the draught Julian Vance paid you to administer to your own child. You didn’t bury Grace… you put her to sleep so they could steal her away to raise her as Vance’s heiress.”
Daniel’s knees buckled. The world stopped spinning. The bitter grief he had carried for three years wasn’t a tragedy—it was an orchestrated, calculated theft built on his own blind trust.
Suddenly, a loud snap echoed directly above the rocky overhang.
A figure dropped from the ledge above, landing heavily in the snow between Daniel and the trembling children.
A sawed-off sH๏τgun leveled straight at Oliver’s forehead.
The hammer pulled back.
And from beneath the frost-covered fur hood, a voice Daniel hadn’t heard in five long years whispered coldly:
“Give Vance the watch, Daniel… or I put a hole through my own son.”
