PART 2: THE FINAL GIFT — THE SECRET THAT DESTROYED SOPHIA

But nothing had prepared him for the morning he discovered his wife and daughter were gone.
He stood in the middle of his bedroom, Evelyn’s letter crushed in his fist.
He read it again.
Then a third time.
“I want a divorce.”
Those four words seemed to echo through the enormous house.
“Boss?”
His head snapped toward the doorway.
Vincent, his most trusted bodyguard, stood there.
“Find Evelyn.”
“Already trying, sir. Her phone is switched off. Her credit cards haven’t been used, and the airport security footage shows—”
“Then find another way!” Alexander barked. “I want every airport, every private terminal, every highway checked. I want to know where my wife and daughter are!”
Vincent hesitated.
“Sir, there’s something else.”
“What?”
“Your attorney called. He received a package from Mrs. Moretti early this morning.”
Alexander went still.
“What package?”
“A legal envelope. He says it concerns Sophia Reynolds.”
Before Alexander could respond, his phone rang again.
Sophia.
He answered.
“Tell me what happened.”
“Alexander!” she screamed. “She’s ruined everything! Everything!”
“Stop crying and explain.”
Sophia was breathing heavily.
“Your wife sent people to my apartment. They’ve taken everything!”
Alexander frowned.
“Who?”
“Lawyers! Accountants! People from the bank! They’re saying my accounts are frozen. They’re saying I have to return money!”
“What money?”
There was a long silence.
Then Sophia whispered:
“The money you gave me.”
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“What are you talking about?”
“Please come here. I can’t explain over the phone.”
He grabbed his car keys.
“Don’t touch anything. Don’t speak to anyone. I’m coming.”
But as he walked toward the garage, Vincent spoke again.
“Sir, I think you should see the documents first.”
Alexander turned.
“Why?”
Vincent swallowed.
“Because I believe Mrs. Moretti knew exactly what Sophia was going to do.”
The gift Evelyn left behind
Sophia was waiting in her luxury apartment when Alexander arrived.
Her mascara had run down her cheeks. Several expensive handbags were scattered across the living room, and a laptop sat open on the coffee table.
The moment she saw him, she rushed forward.
“Alexander!”
He caught her shoulders.
“Enough. Tell me what happened.”
Sophia pointed toward the laptop.
“Your wife destroyed me!”
On the screen was an official-looking notice from a financial insтιтution.
It concerned the review of several large transfers made over the previous three years.
Alexander read the first page.
Then the second.
His jaw тιԍнтened.
The transfers had come from a company connected to one of his business holdings.
There were payments for luxury apartments, jewelry, travel, designer clothing, and a substantial monthly allowance.
He recognized every single one.
He had authorized most of them.
But the final page contained something he hadn’t expected.
A signed financial audit.
And beneath it was a statement from Evelyn’s legal representative.
All transactions suspected of involving unauthorized personal benefits, undisclosed conflicts of interest, or misuse of company funds are being referred for independent investigation.
Alexander looked up.
“What did you do, Sophia?”
Her face crumpled.
“Nothing! I swear!”
“Then why is your name on these documents?”
“Because Evelyn is jealous! She’s always hated me!”
He stared at her.
“These transfers total nearly four million dollars.”
Sophia began sobbing.
“You gave me that money!”
“I know what I gave you.”
“Then why are you questioning me?”
Alexander stepped away.
“Because I want to know why my wife’s attorney has a complete record of every transaction.”
Sophia’s crying suddenly stopped.
For a fraction of a second, her expression changed.
Then she whispered:
“She must have stolen your files.”
Alexander looked at her.
And for the first time, he wondered whether Sophia had been telling him the truth all these years.
The secret Evelyn had uncovered
Three months earlier, I had discovered something unusual while reviewing documents connected to our family’s financial holdings.
Alexander had always insisted that our household finances were complicated.
He claimed several transfers were business expenses.
Others, he said, were investments.
I had never questioned him.
Until I found a series of payments connected to Sophia.
At first, I thought they were gifts.
Then I discovered that some had been recorded as consulting fees through a company that had never provided any identifiable consulting services.
I hired an independent forensic accountant.
What he uncovered was disturbing.
Sophia had been receiving money through several arrangements connected to businesses Alexander controlled.
Some payments were legitimate gifts.
Others appeared to have been disguised as business expenses.
There were also documents bearing my name that I had never signed.
One authorization purported to show that I had approved a substantial transfer from a family investment account.
I hadn’t.
I immediately contacted my attorney, Rebecca Lawson.
She advised me not to confront either of them until the documents were secured and independently reviewed.
For weeks, I gathered evidence.
I preserved emails, financial statements, invoices, and messages.
I discovered that Sophia had been telling people she was enтιтled to a portion of the Moretti family’s wealth because Alexander had promised to marry her before he met me.
But the worst discovery came from a message Sophia had sent to one of her friends.
“Once Alexander gets tired of playing husband, everything will fall into place. Evelyn is too quiet to fight for anything.”
Another message followed.
“Besides, he always comes running when I cry.”
I read those words repeatedly.
Then I understood.
Sophia didn’t simply want Alexander’s attention.
She wanted my place.
And Alexander had been helping her take it.
Alexander discovers the truth
Back in Sophia’s apartment, Alexander was reading the report his attorney had forwarded.
“Vincent.”
His bodyguard stepped closer.
“Yes, sir?”
“Who authorized these consulting payments?”
Vincent hesitated.
“Several were approved through your office.”
“By whom?”
“Your executive ᴀssistant processed the instructions. But the original requests came from Sophia.”
Alexander turned toward her.
“Why were you requesting money through my companies?”
Sophia shook her head.
“I wasn’t! You told me to use those accounts!”
“Show me where.”
She couldn’t answer.
Alexander looked back at the documents.
Then he noticed an attachment.
It was a screensH๏τ of a conversation between Sophia and his former executive ᴀssistant.
Sophia had written:
“Make sure the invoices look legitimate. Alexander doesn’t check the details, and Evelyn won’t ever know.”
The ᴀssistant had responded:
“What if the auditors ask questions?”
Sophia replied:
“By then, I’ll have what I need.”
Alexander’s fingers тιԍнтened around the paper.
“What did you mean by that?”
Sophia’s face went pale.
“Those messages are fake.”
“Then why are they in the audit?”
“Evelyn fabricated them!”
Alexander stared at her.
For years, he had believed Sophia was the innocent childhood friend who needed his protection.
Now he was beginning to see how carefully she had used that belief.
His phone vibrated.
His attorney.
Alexander answered.
“Tell me you’ve found something.”
The attorney’s voice was serious.
“We have. Evelyn’s legal team has submitted a formal complaint concerning the disputed financial documents. More importantly, there are indications that someone attempted to use her idenтιтy to authorize transactions.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
“Who?”
“We’re investigating. But the documents point toward someone with access to your financial office.”
He looked at Sophia.
She was no longer crying.
She was watching him.
And something about her expression made his stomach turn.
The call from the airport
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, I was sitting in a quiet airport lounge with Lily asleep against my chest.
Rebecca had arranged for a family law attorney in our destination city to meet us.
I had also secured temporary accommodation and made sure Lily’s documents were safe.
My phone was switched off.
But Rebecca had my emergency contact information.
When she approached me with her tablet, I immediately recognized the expression on her face.
“What’s happened?”
“Alexander has received the financial report.”
I nodded.
“And Sophia?”
“She’s panicking. Her attorney has contacted ours.”
I looked down at Lily.
“Is everything protected?”
“Your personal ᴀssets and the inheritance placed in your name are being handled separately. We’ve also requested appropriate temporary arrangements regarding custody and communication.”
I exhaled.
For the first time in months, my shoulders relaxed.
Then Rebecca showed me something else.
A message from Sophia, sent to an account she apparently believed was private.
It read:
I told you to get rid of the documents before Evelyn found them. Now Alexander knows everything. If he goes down, I’m taking everyone with me.
I stared at the screen.
“Who was she talking to?”
“We don’t know yet. The recipient appears to be someone connected to the financial office.”
I handed the tablet back.
“Preserve it. Don’t contact her.”
Rebecca nodded.
“That’s exactly what we’re doing.”
I looked through the airport window.
The plane that would carry Lily and me toward a new life was waiting outside.
I had left Chicago because I refused to let my daughter grow up believing that a husband had the right to humiliate his wife.
But I also knew this wasn’t over.
Alexander would eventually discover that the woman he had slapped in front of an entire restaurant had been protecting his family from a financial disaster he hadn’t even noticed.
And Sophia?
She was about to discover that the money she had enjoyed spending might become the very thing that exposed her.
“Alexander, you promised me!”
At 6:40 that evening, Alexander returned to his mansion.
He had barely entered his study when Sophia arrived.
She hadn’t been invited.
She walked straight past the security staff and slammed the door behind her.
“Alexander, we need to talk.”
He didn’t look up.
“Leave.”
Her face twisted.
“What?”
“I said leave.”
“After everything we’ve been through?”
He finally raised his eyes.
“Everything we’ve been through?”
Sophia stepped toward his desk.
“You promised you would always protect me!”
Alexander stood.
“I protected you for years.”
“Then why are you letting Evelyn do this?”
“Because Evelyn didn’t create those financial records. You did.”
Sophia shook her head violently.
“She manipulated you! She’s always wanted to separate us!”
Alexander stared at her.
“Do you know what I remember from last night?”
Sophia said nothing.
“I remember my wife sitting across from me at dinner. I remember her asking you to stop humiliating her. And I remember raising my hand and hitting her because you started crying.”
Sophia’s expression softened.
“Alexander, you were only defending me.”
He looked at her as though he hadn’t heard correctly.
“Defending you?”
“She was insulting me!”
“And that gave me the right to hit my wife?”
Sophia reached for his hand.
“You know I never wanted things to get this complicated.”
He pulled away.
“Don’t touch me.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You’re choosing her?”
“No. I’m finally looking at what you’ve been doing.”
Sophia’s face changed completely.
“Then you’re going to regret it.”
She picked up her handbag.
Before leaving, she turned around.
“There’s something Evelyn doesn’t know about you, Alexander. Something that could destroy everything you’ve built.”
He frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Sophia smiled.
A cold, unfamiliar smile.
“Ask your father what happened twenty years ago.”
Then she walked out.
Alexander remained standing in the middle of his office.
His phone rang.
This time, it was his father.
And the first words out of the older man’s mouth were:
“Alexander, whatever Sophia tells you, don’t believe her. There’s something about Evelyn’s inheritance that you need to understand before it’s too late.”
Alexander slowly sat down.
For the second time that day, he felt the ground shifting beneath him.
Because the woman he had slapped, humiliated, and driven away might not have been the only person Sophia had been deceiving.
And somewhere in Chicago, an old family secret was finally coming to light.
But Alexander had no idea that the next envelope waiting on his desk contained a document that would change his understanding of his entire marriage.
