PART 2 – THE BILLIONAIRE WHO LOST EVERYTHING

Not the business rivals who wanted him ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. Not the politicians who threatened to destroy his empire. Not even the men who had once pointed guns at his head.
But that night, standing in the Grand Meridian H๏τel lobby with Claire’s ultrasound trembling between his fingers, he experienced something he had never known before.
Fear.
A terrifying, suffocating fear that he had just lost the two people who should have mattered most to him.
“Find her!” he shouted again.
His head of security, Marcus, immediately approached.
“Mr. Moretti, we’ve checked the main entrance. Mrs. Moretti left approximately twelve minutes ago. We’re reviewing the exterior cameras now.”
“Twelve minutes?”
Alexander looked at him as though he hadn’t understood.
“Twelve minutes, and nobody thought to stop her?”
“Sir, we didn’t know—”
“DON’T TELL ME WHAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW!”
His voice sent several H๏τel employees stepping backward.
Alexander looked down at the ultrasound again.
There was a tiny image of a baby.
His baby.
He traced the printed date with his thumb.
Seven weeks.
Seven weeks of a life growing inside his wife while he had been too busy answering another woman’s phone calls to notice that something had changed.
He suddenly remembered the past few months.
Claire refusing champagne at dinner.
Claire falling asleep on the sofa before he returned home.
Claire asking him whether he would be happy if they ever had a child.
And his response?
He had barely looked up from his phone.
“Let’s talk about that another time, sweetheart. Vanessa is having a difficult week.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
He remembered Claire smiling politely.
He remembered her turning away.
And now he understood that every one of those moments had been an opportunity he would never get back.
“Marcus,” he said, his voice suddenly quieter. “Find out where she went. Call every driver. Check every camera around this H๏τel.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And get me a doctor.”
Marcus hesitated.
“Sir?”
Alexander held up the ultrasound.
“My wife is pregnant. I need to know if she’s safe.”
Meanwhile, three miles away, I sat in the back of a yellow taxi, staring out at the Chicago skyline.
My cheek was still burning.
Every few minutes, I touched it as though I couldn’t believe Alexander had actually hit me.
Five years.
Five years of defending him.
Five years of making excuses for his relationship with Vanessa.
Five years of convincing myself that a marriage could survive anything as long as I loved him enough.
But tonight, he had slapped me in front of hundreds of people.
And the worst part wasn’t even the pain.
It was the look on his face afterward.
He hadn’t looked horrified.
He hadn’t apologized.
He had ordered me to apologize to the woman who had spent five years standing between us.
I rested one hand over my stomach.
“I’m sorry, little one,” I whispered.
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“You deserved a better beginning than this.”
My phone began vibrating.
Alexander.
I declined the call.
It rang again.
And again.
Then a message appeared.
Alexander: Claire, answer me. We need to talk.
I stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
Alexander: I found the ultrasound.
My heart тιԍнтened.
Alexander: You’re pregnant?
I didn’t respond.
Then came another message.
Alexander: Why didn’t you tell me?
I almost laughed.
Why hadn’t I told him?
Because I had planned to tell him in front of everyone, during the celebration of the five years we had spent building a life together.
Because I had wanted to see his face light up.
Because I had imagined him taking my hands, kissing my forehead, and promising that our child would never have to question whether they belonged.
Instead, he had made me feel like a stranger in my own marriage.
I typed one sentence.
Me: I wanted our baby to have a father who knew how to respect its mother.
Then I switched off my phone.
At the Grand Meridian, Alexander was losing control.
“Where is she?”
Marcus approached with a tablet.
“We found the taxi’s registration number. The driver dropped Mrs. Moretti near an apartment building in Lincoln Park. We’re confirming the address.”
“Then take me there!”
Alexander grabbed his car keys.
But before he could leave, a familiar voice stopped him.
“Alexander?”
Vanessa.
She was standing near the ballroom entrance, still wearing her white designer gown.
Margaret stood beside her.
“Darling, where are you going?” his mother asked. “The guests are waiting. We still haven’t cut the anniversary cake.”
Alexander turned slowly.
For the first time that evening, he looked at Vanessa without the familiar softness in his eyes.
“What did you say to Claire?”
Vanessa blinked.
“What?”
“I asked you a question.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“Alexander, don’t speak to Vanessa like that. Your wife was the one who created that ridiculous scene.”
“My wife?”
He gave a bitter laugh.
“Mother, I watched myself slap my pregnant wife tonight.”
Margaret’s face changed.
Vanessa immediately put a hand over her mouth.
“Pregnant?”
Alexander looked at her.
“Yes. Claire is pregnant.”
For a moment, Vanessa said nothing.
Then her expression softened into something resembling sympathy.
“Oh, Alexander. I didn’t know.”
He stared at her.
“You didn’t know?”
“I swear. I only wanted to sit beside you. I never meant for this to happen.”
“Then why were you wearing white?”
Vanessa looked down at her dress.
“It’s just a dress.”
“No. It was my wedding anniversary. You knew exactly what you were doing.”
Margaret interrupted.
“Enough! Vanessa has been part of this family for years. Claire should have understood that.”
Alexander turned toward his mother.
“And what about Claire? Was she supposed to understand that too?”
“Don’t be unreasonable.”
“Unreasonable?”
His voice dropped dangerously.
“Mother, I allowed you to disrespect my wife for five years because I thought keeping peace in this family was more important than confronting you.”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“Watch your tone.”
“No. You watch yours. Claire was my wife. She was carrying my child. And you pointed to her chair and offered it to another woman as though she didn’t belong here.”
Vanessa began crying.
“Alexander, please. You’re making me feel terrible.”
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said something that made her tears stop.
“Your feelings are no longer my responsibility.”
He turned to Marcus.
“Get me out of here.”
When Alexander finally reached the apartment building, he ran up the stairs instead of waiting for the elevator.
He knocked on the door.
“Claire!”
No answer.
He knocked again.
“Claire, it’s me. Please open the door.”
A light appeared beneath the door.
Then it disappeared.
He pressed his forehead against the wood.
“Please, sweetheart. I know you’re inside.”
The door finally opened.
But it wasn’t Claire.
It was an older woman wearing a gray cardigan.
“Can I help you?”
“I’m looking for Claire Moretti.”
The woman studied his face.
“Are you the husband?”
“Yes. Where is she?”
The woman’s expression immediately turned cold.
“She came here about twenty minutes ago. She was crying.”
Alexander swallowed.
“Is she still here?”
“No.”
“Where did she go?”
The woman folded her arms.
“I don’t think that’s something I should tell you.”
“Please. She’s pregnant. I need to know she’s safe.”
The woman looked at him for several seconds.
Then she said quietly:
“Then perhaps you should have thought about her safety before striking her in front of an entire ballroom.”
Alexander went completely still.
“You saw that?”
“Everyone saw it. It’s already being discussed.”
He looked down.
The woman sighed.
“She left a bag here. I offered to let her stay, but she said she needed somewhere quiet to think. She took a car to the airport.”
“The airport?”
Alexander’s head snapped up.
“Which airport?”
“I don’t know.”
He immediately turned toward the stairs.
But the woman called after him.
“Mr. Moretti?”
He stopped.
“If you really love her, don’t confuse finding her with having the right to bring her back.”
For the first time that night, Alexander had no answer.
At O’Hare International Airport, I sat beside the departure windows with a small suitcase at my feet.
I had purchased a one-way ticket to Boston.
My best friend, Olivia, had agreed to let me stay with her until I figured out what to do next.
My phone was switched off, but I could still hear Alexander’s voice in my head.
Claire, answer me.
Claire, where are you?
Claire, we need to talk.
For five years, I had waited for him to speak to me like I mattered.
Now that I had finally walked away, he suddenly had a thousand things to say.
Olivia called from the airport entrance.
“Claire? Where are you?”
“Near Gate 18.”
“I’ll be there in two minutes.”
I looked down at my stomach.
A tiny life.
An innocent child who had done nothing wrong.
I couldn’t let my baby grow up believing love meant accepting humiliation.
I couldn’t raise a child in a house where one woman was constantly treated as more important than their own mother.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
I had turned it on to check my boarding pᴀss.
An unfamiliar number appeared.
I answered cautiously.
“Hello?”
“Mrs. Moretti?”
“Yes?”
“This is Dr. Reynolds from the Grand Meridian medical team. Mr. Moretti asked us to contact you.”
My stomach тιԍнтened.
“Why?”
“Your husband informed us that you’re approximately seven weeks pregnant. Given the stress and the incident tonight, we strongly recommend that you have a medical ᴀssessment, particularly if you’ve experienced any pain, dizziness, or bleeding.”
I looked at my cheek in the reflection of the airport window.
“I’m fine.”
“I’m glad to hear that. But please don’t ignore any symptoms.”
I thanked him and ended the call.
Then another message appeared.
This time, it was from Alexander.
Alexander: I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.
Alexander: I know I hurt you.
Alexander: But please, Claire. Tell me our baby is okay.
I stared at those words for a long time.
Then I replied.
Me: Our baby is the reason I’m leaving.
I switched off my phone again.
Back at the Moretti mansion, Margaret was waiting in the living room when Alexander returned.
He looked exhausted.
His tie was undone, his shirt was wrinkled, and his hands still carried traces of the dirt from the H๏τel trash can.
“Alexander, we need to discuss tonight.”
He walked past her.
“Not now.”
“Vanessa is devastated.”
He stopped.
Slowly, he turned around.
“Mother, if you mention Vanessa’s name one more time tonight, I swear I will ask you to leave this house.”
Margaret stared at him.
“You would throw your own mother out for that woman?”
“No.”
He looked at the ultrasound in his hand.
“I would finally stop sacrificing my family for someone who isn’t my family.”
Margaret’s lips parted.
Alexander continued.
“I want you to understand something. Claire is not coming back to this house because I demand it. If she ever comes back, it will be because she feels safe enough to do so.”
He walked upstairs.
Inside his study, he placed the ultrasound carefully on his desk.
Then he opened his laptop.
The first headline that appeared made his blood run cold.
CHICAGO BILLIONAIRE ALEXANDER MORETTI SLAPS WIFE AT FIFTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION.
Below it was a pH๏τograph.
Claire standing on the stage, one hand against her cheek, while he stood in front of her.
Another article had already been published.
WHO IS VANESSA BLAKE, THE WOMAN AT THE CENTER OF THE MORETTI ANNIVERSARY SCANDAL?
There were pH๏τographs of Vanessa and him together.
At charity events.
At restaurants.
At private gatherings.
Some pH๏τographs had been taken years before his marriage.
Others were recent.
He suddenly realized how many times he had allowed Vanessa to occupy a place in his life that should have belonged to Claire.
Then his phone rang.
It was Marcus.
“Sir, we have a problem.”
Alexander straightened.
“What happened?”
“Vanessa just released a statement to the press.”
“About what?”
“She claims Mrs. Moretti attacked her verbally and that you only reacted because you were trying to protect her.”
Alexander’s expression turned icy.
“She’s lying.”
“Yes, sir. But there’s something else.”
“What?”
Marcus hesitated.
“We recovered additional footage from the ballroom. It shows Vanessa speaking privately with Mrs. Moretti before the incident.”
Alexander looked toward the door.
“What were they discussing?”
“We haven’t reviewed the audio completely. But, sir…”
“Say it.”
“Vanessa appears to have told your mother that she intended to announce something during the anniversary celebration.”
Alexander’s fingers тιԍнтened around the phone.
“What announcement?”
Marcus took a breath.
“She told Mrs. Moretti that she planned to tell everyone she was still in love with you.”
Silence filled the study.
Then Alexander slowly looked down at the ultrasound.
Suddenly, the white dress, the stolen chair, and the way Vanessa had thrown herself into his arms made a terrible kind of sense.
This hadn’t been an innocent misunderstanding.
Someone had planned to humiliate his wife.
And he had played his part perfectly.
“Marcus,” he said.
“Yes, sir?”
“Get the full recording. Every second. I want to know exactly what happened before Claire walked onto that stage.”
“Understood.”
“And Marcus?”
“Yes?”
Alexander’s voice broke slightly.
“Find out whether Claire reached Boston safely. Don’t approach her. Don’t frighten her. I only need to know she’s safe.”
At that very moment, thousands of feet above the ground, I rested my head against the airplane window.
Olivia was sitting beside me, holding my hand.
“You don’t have to decide everything tonight,” she whispered.
I nodded.
Then I reached into my handbag and pulled out a second folded piece of paper.
It wasn’t the ultrasound.
It was a document I had prepared three days before the anniversary.
A divorce peтιтion.
I had signed my name at the bottom.
But there was something else inside the envelope.
A letter from my attorney explaining that, before our marriage, I had established an independent trust containing the inheritance my grandmother had left me.
It had nothing to do with Alexander’s fortune.
I wasn’t leaving because I wanted his money.
I wasn’t asking for his mansion, his cars, or a single dollar from his empire.
I simply wanted my freedom.
Olivia looked at the document.
“Have you decided?”
I looked down at the tiny ultrasound pH๏τograph I had secretly printed before the party.
A small smile appeared through my tears.
“Yes.”
I placed my hand over my stomach.
“My child will never have to beg anyone to make room for us.”
At 2:17 a.m., Alexander received a message from Marcus.
Marcus: Sir, we reviewed the complete ballroom footage.
A video file followed.
Alexander opened it.
The recording showed Vanessa arriving at the H๏τel.
It showed Margaret greeting her.
Then, several minutes before the incident, the two women disappeared into a private corridor.
Their conversation was clear.
Vanessa leaned toward Margaret.
“Once Claire leaves, everything will be easier.”
Margaret smiled.
“Don’t worry. Alexander has always had a soft spot for you.”
“What if she refuses to give me her seat?”
Margaret laughed.
“Then let her. If she makes a scene, everyone will see what kind of woman she really is.”
Vanessa looked toward the ballroom.
“And Alexander?”
“He’ll handle Claire. He always does.”
Alexander stopped the recording.
His face had turned pale.
For five years, he had believed he was simply being kind to an old friend.
But the woman he had protected had been planning to destroy his marriage.
And his own mother had helped her.
He picked up his phone and called Vanessa.
She answered almost immediately.
“Alexander? Darling, I’ve been waiting for your call.”
“Don’t call me darling.”
Silence.
“What?”
“I watched the recording.”
Another silence.
Then Vanessa began speaking quickly.
“Alexander, I can explain. Your mother misunderstood what I meant—”
“You planned to humiliate my wife.”
“I was only trying to—”
“You were trying to take her place.”
“Alexander, you know we’ve always had something special!”
He closed his eyes.
“No, Vanessa. We had a past. And I allowed you to use it as an excuse to disrespect my wife.”
“But I love you!”
Alexander’s voice was cold.
“Then you should have respected the fact that I was married.”
He ended the call.
A moment later, he sent one final message to his legal team.
Terminate every business arrangement involving Vanessa Blake. Preserve all communications and recordings.
Then he sat alone in his study.
The first morning light was beginning to appear beyond the windows.
He picked up the ultrasound again.
Seven weeks.
He had missed seven weeks of his child’s life already.
And he had no idea whether he would ever be allowed to see another pH๏τograph.
His phone lit up.
An email had arrived.
The subject line read:
NOTICE OF DIVORCE – CLAIRE MORETTI.
Alexander opened it.
His wife’s signature appeared at the bottom.
For a long time, he simply stared.
Then he noticed the final paragraph.
I am not asking you to love me anymore, Alexander. I am asking you to leave me in peace. Our child deserves a mother who is not afraid, and I intend to give them that.
His eyes filled with tears.
He lowered his head and whispered into the empty room.
“I know, Claire. I know.”
But just as he reached for his phone, another message arrived from Marcus.
Marcus: Sir, there’s something else you need to know. Vanessa has contacted the press again. She’s claiming that the baby may not be yours.
Alexander slowly raised his head.
His expression changed completely.
Because now, the woman who had already destroyed his marriage was attempting to destroy the only thing he had left of it.
And this time, Alexander Moretti was determined to uncover the truth.
But the biggest shock was still waiting for him.
Three days later, when his lawyers contacted Claire’s attorney to discuss the divorce, they received a response that left the entire Moretti legal team speechless.
Claire wasn’t asking for a settlement.
She wasn’t asking for the mansion.
She wasn’t even asking for child support.
She had made one condition.
Alexander Moretti was to have no contact with her until an independent paternity test could be arranged—and until she personally decided whether he deserved to meet his child.
For the first time in his life, Alexander couldn’t negotiate his way out of a consequence.
He could only wait.
And somewhere in Boston, Claire was beginning a new life without him.
