PART 2 — THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED AND THE SECRET THAT DESTROYED A MAFIA EMPIRE

“Who?” Alexander demanded.

The elderly housekeeper looked as though she had seen a ghost.

“Mrs. Moretti, sir.”

Alexander stopped breathing.

For five days, he had searched every hospital, every abandoned building, every motel, and every corner of Chicago. He had threatened police officers, paid informants, and sent his men into neighborhoods where even his enemies feared to walk.

And now someone was standing outside his mansion claiming to be his missing wife.

“Bring her inside,” he ordered.

The housekeeper hesitated.

“Sir… there’s something you should know.”

Alexander grabbed her arm.

“What?”

“She isn’t alone.”

His heart began pounding.

He rushed toward the entrance.

The mᴀssive doors opened.

And there she stood.

Claire.

Her face was pale. Her hair was tied carelessly behind her head, and she wore an oversized gray coat over a simple maternity dress.

She looked exhausted.

But she was standing.

And beside her was a woman Alexander had never seen before, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.

Alexander stared at the bundle.

“Claire…”

His voice cracked.

Claire didn’t answer.

He took one step forward.

“Where have you been? Do you have any idea what I’ve—”

“Stop.”

Her voice was quiet.

But it stopped him completely.

Alexander looked at her stomach.

It was flat.

His eyes moved back to the baby.

“Is that…?”

Claire тιԍнтened her grip on the blanket.

“Meet your daughter.”

For several seconds, Alexander couldn’t speak.

“She’s alive?”

Claire gave him a cold look.

“Were you expecting something else?”

He swallowed.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

A bitter laugh escaped her lips.

“Call you?”

“Claire, I searched everywhere!”

“You had five days to search. I had nine months to prepare for the possibility that my husband would abandon me.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Neither was watching you build a family with another woman while I carried your child.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“Please. Let me see her.”

Claire looked at the woman beside her.

The woman gently transferred the baby into Claire’s arms.

“Her name is Sophie,” Claire said.

Alexander’s eyes filled with tears.

“Sophie.”

He repeated the name as though saying it might somehow make everything right.

Then he reached out.

Claire stepped backward.

“Don’t touch her.”

His hand froze in midair.

“She’s my daughter.”

“She was your daughter when I was having contractions alone in a freezing alley. She was your daughter when I couldn’t breathe through the pain. She was your daughter when I begged strangers to help me deliver her.”

Alexander’s face went white.

“You gave birth in an alley?”

Claire nodded.

“Behind an abandoned bakery. A woman named Margaret found me.”

The woman beside her stepped forward.

“My name is Margaret Wilson. I’m a nurse. I was leaving my shift when I heard someone crying.”

Alexander looked at her.

Margaret continued.

“She was lying on the ground, clutching her suitcase. She was already in active labor. If I hadn’t stopped, I don’t know what would have happened.”

Alexander lowered his head.

“Thank you.”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“You don’t owe me thanks. You owe your wife an explanation.”

Alexander looked back at Claire.

“I can explain everything.”

Claire shook her head.

“No. You can listen.”

Five days earlier, Claire had reached the end of the alley just as another contraction seized her body.

She had collapsed beside a pile of cardboard boxes.

Her suitcase fell open.

Baby clothes scattered across the wet pavement.

She tried to reach for her phone.

But her hands were shaking too badly.

For one terrible moment, she thought she and her baby would die there.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Ma’am? Can you hear me?”

A woman in a nurse’s uniform rushed toward her.

“I’m Margaret. I’m a nurse. Look at me, sweetheart. We’re going to get you through this.”

Claire began crying.

“Please… my baby…”

“I know. We’re going to help your baby.”

Margaret called for emergency ᴀssistance, but the delivery progressed too quickly.

With the help of another pᴀsserby, she delivered Sophie in the back room of a nearby community shelter.

The baby cried.

Claire cried harder.

She held her daughter against her chest and whispered the words she had repeated throughout her pregnancy.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart. I’m sorry your father wasn’t here.”

Margaret sat beside her.

“Don’t apologize. You did beautifully.”

That night, Claire made another decision.

She would never return to Alexander’s mansion.

Not for money.

Not for his protection.

And certainly not because he suddenly remembered he had a wife.

Back in the mansion, Alexander stood motionless.

“Claire, I didn’t know you were in danger.”

She looked at him.

“You knew I was pregnant.”

“I thought you were safe.”

“You knew I was having contractions that night. I told you.”

His face crumpled.

“I thought you were exaggerating.”

The silence that followed was devastating.

Claire stared at him as though she no longer recognized the man standing before her.

“You thought I was exaggerating?”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“I made a terrible mistake.”

“No, Alexander. You made a choice.”

She adjusted Sophie’s blanket.

“You chose Vanessa. You chose her son. You chose to humiliate me in my own home. And when I told you I was leaving, you laughed.”

“I never wanted you to leave.”

“You never believed I could.”

He had no answer.

Then, from the staircase, a familiar voice interrupted them.

“Well, this is an interesting reunion.”

Vanessa.

She descended slowly, wearing a cream silk robe.

Behind her was her little boy, holding a stuffed dinosaur.

Alexander turned sharply.

“Vanessa, go upstairs.”

She ignored him.

Her eyes settled on Claire and the baby.

“So this is the famous missing wife.”

Claire didn’t respond.

Vanessa smiled.

“I suppose you expect everyone to welcome you back now.”

Alexander’s voice became dangerous.

“Enough.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Darling, you told me she was gone for good. You said we could finally have a proper family.”

Claire looked at Alexander.

“Is that what you told her?”

He said nothing.

Vanessa laughed.

“Don’t look so surprised, Claire. Alexander promised me the east wing, the household staff, and everything that belongs to a Moretti wife.”

Claire’s expression remained strangely calm.

“Then you should enjoy it.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

“Because I’m not staying.”

Alexander immediately stepped forward.

“Claire, wait.”

She turned toward him.

“I came here for one reason.”

He looked at Sophie.

“To bring your daughter into this world with her father’s name recorded correctly. Margaret helped me with the paperwork. I wanted you to know she exists.”

Alexander’s eyes widened.

“You registered her?”

“Yes. Sophie Claire Moretti.”

He looked almost relieved.

Then Claire added:

“But you will not decide how she is raised.”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

“Alexander, you can’t let her do this!”

He didn’t answer.

Claire reached into her coat and pulled out a thick envelope.

She placed it on the marble table.

“What is this?” Alexander asked.

“My attorney’s letter. I want a divorce, full custody of Sophie, and a financial settlement based on the ᴀssets we acquired during our marriage.”

Alexander stared at the envelope.

“You brought a lawyer into this?”

“I brought someone who knows my rights.”

“You’re my wife.”

“Not for much longer.”

He stepped closer.

“Claire, we can fix this. I’ll send Vanessa away. I’ll have the east wing cleared tonight. You can have anything you want.”

Claire looked at him for a long moment.

“Five days ago, I would have given anything to hear you say that.”

His eyes softened.

“Then come home.”

She shook her head.

“I did come home, Alexander. You made sure it wasn’t mine anymore.”

Alexander’s phone suddenly rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His head of security.

“Excuse me.”

He answered.

“What?”

The voice on the other end was urgent.

“Boss, we found something from the night Mrs. Moretti disappeared.”

Alexander turned away.

“What?”

“The alley footage wasn’t the only recording. There’s a camera inside the abandoned bakery.”

His eyes narrowed.

“And?”

“We recovered the footage.”

“Show me.”

A moment later, a video appeared on his phone.

He watched Claire stumble into the alley.

He watched her collapse.

He watched Margaret run toward her.

Then something else appeared.

A black SUV parked at the far end of the street.

A man stepped out.

Alexander recognized him immediately.

His own personal security chief, Thomas.

Thomas approached the alley, watched Margaret help Claire, and then made a phone call.

Alexander’s blood ran cold.

“Enhance the audio,” he ordered.

A few seconds later, Thomas’s voice came through the recording.

“Boss, she’s gone. We found her suitcase, but there’s no sign of her.”

A second voice answered.

Alexander recognized that voice too.

Vanessa.

“Good. Make sure she never comes back.”

Alexander slowly turned toward the woman standing on his staircase.

Vanessa had gone completely pale.

“Dante—”

“Don’t.”

He looked at the video again.

Then at Claire.

“Someone knew where you were.”

Claire’s expression changed.

“I know.”

Alexander stared at her.

“You knew?”

She nodded.

“Margaret found something in my suitcase when she helped me at the shelter.”

“What?”

Claire reached into her handbag.

She removed a small silver flash drive.

“This was hidden inside the lining of my hospital bag.”

Alexander took it.

“What’s on it?”

“Everything.”

“Everything about what?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained steady.

“Your wife wasn’t the only person Vanessa wanted out of the mansion.”

Alexander looked toward Vanessa.

For the first time, she wasn’t smiling.

Claire continued.

“Three weeks before I left, I found financial records showing that someone had been transferring money out of your companies. Millions of dollars. The transfers were approved using your signature.”

Alexander stared at the flash drive.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

His expression changed.

Claire continued.

“You were too busy taking Vanessa to dinner.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Who was behind it?”

Claire glanced toward Vanessa.

Then she delivered the words that made the entire mansion fall silent.

“Your mistress wasn’t trying to replace me, Alexander.”

She paused.

“She was trying to take your entire empire.”

At that exact moment, the front doors opened.

Thomas walked inside.

He stopped when he saw Claire.

Then he looked at the flash drive in Alexander’s hand.

His face turned white.

Alexander slowly raised his head.

“Thomas.”

The security chief swallowed.

“Boss?”

“Close the doors.”

Thomas didn’t move.

Alexander’s voice dropped to a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly whisper.

“I said close the doors.”

Thomas reached inside his jacket.

And Sophie suddenly began crying.

Claire instinctively turned away, protecting her daughter with her entire body.

Alexander saw the movement.

He stepped between Claire and Thomas.

“Don’t you dare.”

Thomas pulled out a gun.

But before he could raise it, another voice came from behind him.

“Put it down, Thomas.”

Margaret Wilson stood in the doorway.

And beside her was a uniformed federal agent.

Alexander stared in disbelief.

Claire looked directly at her husband.

“You thought I disappeared because I had nowhere to go.”

She held Sophie closer.

“But I disappeared because I finally understood that the safest place for my daughter was somewhere you couldn’t find us.”

The federal agent stepped forward.

“Thomas Moretti, you’re under arrest.”

Alexander looked at Claire.

For the first time in five years, he had no command to give, no threat to make, and no money powerful enough to change what was happening.

His wife had survived without him.

His daughter had been born without him.

And the woman he had dismissed as boring had just exposed the betrayal happening inside his own empire.

But as the agents restrained Thomas, his phone vibrated.

One message appeared.

From an unknown number.

YOU’RE LOOKING AT THE WRONG WOMAN, ALEXANDER. VANESSA ISN’T THE ONE WHO ORDERED THE HIT.

Alexander slowly raised his eyes.

Vanessa was gone.

And Claire, holding their newborn daughter, had just realized that the nightmare she escaped five days ago was only the beginning.
