🖤 PART 2: THE MAFIA BOSS DISCOVERED WHO HAD BETRAYED HIS WIFE—BUT THE PERSON BEHIND THE CRASH WAS SOMEONE HE HAD CALLED FAMILY.
Julian Kane played Sophie’s voicemail again.
His daughter’s tiny voice filled the silent office.
“Daddy, please answer. Uncle Marcus says Mommy’s car is making a strange noise. He told me not to worry, but Mommy looks scared…”
A pause followed.
Then Sophie whispered something that made Julian’s blood run cold.
“I heard Uncle Marcus talking on the phone. He said, ‘Tonight, everything will finally be over.’ Daddy, what does that mean?”
The recording ended.
Julian stared at his phone.
Marcus Vale had been his right-hand man for twelve years. He knew every secret entrance to the mansion, every financial account, and every person Julian trusted.
More importantly, Marcus had been the one responsible for maintaining the family’s security vehicles.
If Sophie was telling the truth, the man Julian trusted to protect his family might have been the reason they nearly lost everything.
Julian immediately called his security chief.
“Find Marcus. I want him in front of me within the hour.”
“Boss, there’s a problem.”
“What?”
“Marcus disappeared the night of the accident. He took two pᴀssports, emptied one of the offshore accounts, and hasn’t contacted anyone since.”
Julian’s fingers тιԍнтened around the phone.
“Find him.”
“And one more thing, sir. We reviewed the highway cameras. Another vehicle followed your wife’s car for almost twenty miles before the crash.”
Julian went completely silent.
This wasn’t an ordinary accident.
Someone had been watching Evelyn.
Someone had known where she would be.
And Julian had been thousands of miles away, celebrating another woman’s birthday.
For the first time in years, the most feared man in San Francisco felt powerless.
But the worst discovery was still waiting for him.
An hour later, his security chief entered the office carrying a sealed envelope recovered from Evelyn’s private study.
“Your wife left this behind, sir.”
Julian tore it open.
Inside were bank statements, pH๏τographs, and a handwritten list of names.
At the top was Marcus Vale.
Below it was Nadia.
Julian’s stomach twisted.
He had thought Nadia was simply the woman he had chosen over his wife. He had never imagined she might be connected to the people threatening his family.
The pH๏τographs showed Nadia meeting Marcus at a private restaurant two weeks before the crash.
In another, Marcus was handing her a thick envelope.
The final pH๏τograph was different.
It showed Evelyn standing outside a hospital, speaking to an elderly man Julian recognized immediately.
His former accountant.
The man who had supposedly died five years earlier.
On the back, Evelyn had written:
THE MONEY WAS NEVER THE REAL TARGET. THEY WANT WHAT YOUR FATHER LEFT BEHIND.
Julian sat down slowly.
His father had left him more than an empire. He had left behind a sealed collection of documents that Julian had never been permitted to open until his forty-second birthday.
That birthday was only three weeks away.
Whatever those documents contained, Evelyn had discovered it before he did.
And someone was willing to destroy his family to obtain it.
Julian grabbed his coat.
“Prepare the car.”
“Where are we going, boss?”
“To find my wife.”
For once, he didn’t care about his empire, his enemies, or the millions disappearing from his accounts.
He wanted to hear Evelyn’s voice.
He wanted to see Sophie.
And he wanted to tell them he was sorry.
But apologies were easy when spoken to an empty room.
He had to prove he deserved another chance.
The house by the ocean
Near midnight, a message arrived on Julian’s encrypted phone.
One line.
One address.
And seven words that changed everything.
Come alone if you want to see them.
The address led to a small house overlooking the Pacific, far from the luxurious neighborhoods where Julian’s family had once lived.
He drove there himself.
No guards.
No convoy.
No weapons displayed.
For the first time in his adult life, Julian arrived somewhere without trying to make everyone inside afraid of him.
He knocked.
The door opened a few inches.
Sophie stood on the other side.
Her arm was wrapped in a small bandage, and her eyes were red from crying.
For one heartbreaking second, Julian forgot how to breathe.
“Sweetheart…”
Sophie stepped backward.
“Mommy said you might come.”
Julian knelt.
“Can I hug you?”
His daughter looked at him for a long moment.
Then she shook her head.
“Not yet, Daddy.”
Those two words hurt more than any threat he had ever received.
Behind her, Evelyn appeared.
She was pale, still recovering from her injuries, but her eyes were steady.
Julian rose slowly.
“Evelyn, I—”
“Don’t tell me you’re sorry because you’re afraid of losing us.”
He stopped.
“Tell me why seventeen hospital calls meant less to you than one woman’s birthday.”
Julian had faced armed enemies without blinking.
Now he couldn’t find a single sentence that didn’t sound pathetic.
“Because I was selfish,” he finally admitted. “Because I thought I could have everything and never pay the price.”
Evelyn’s expression didn’t soften.
“You already made me pay it. Sophie paid it, too.”
“I know.”
“No, Julian. You’re beginning to understand.”
She stepped aside, allowing him to enter.
On the kitchen table lay a laptop, several documents, and a small black flash drive.
Evelyn pointed to the screen.
“Three months ago, I discovered that Marcus had been moving money through companies connected to Nadia. At first, I thought you were financing her lifestyle through your own accounts.”
Julian looked away.
“I wasn’t.”
“I know that now. Because the money wasn’t yours to begin with.”
She opened a document.
A transfer of several hundred million dollars had been authorized through a company bearing Julian’s family name.
But the signature wasn’t his.
It belonged to someone who had access to his father’s private records.
Someone who had been ᴅᴇᴀᴅ for five years.
Julian leaned closer.
The room seemed to tilt around him.
His former accountant hadn’t died.
He had been hiding.
And Evelyn had found him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Julian asked.
“I tried. You were too busy telling me not to question you.”
He had no answer.
Evelyn picked up the flash drive.
“This contains the records Marcus was trying to erase. It also contains a recording of his last conversation with Nadia.”
Julian reached for it.
She pulled it back.
“Before you listen, you need to understand something. I didn’t leave to punish you. I left because Sophie needs to know that love doesn’t mean accepting betrayal.”
Her voice trembled slightly.
“And I need to know that if we ever become a family again, it won’t be because I’m afraid of what happens when I walk away.”
Julian nodded.
For once, he didn’t argue.
Evelyn inserted the flash drive.
A recording began.
Marcus’s voice filled the room.
“The crash was supposed to frighten her into handing over the documents. Nobody was supposed to get hurt.”
Nadia answered coldly.
“You were supposed to make sure of that. Now Julian is back, and if he finds the original files, we’re finished.”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“There’s still one problem. Evelyn knows about the inheritance.”
A long silence followed.
Then Nadia spoke again.
“Then we make sure she never gets the chance to tell him the truth.”
The recording stopped.
Julian slowly lifted his eyes toward Evelyn.
She was already watching him.
“They’re coming here,” she whispered.
At that exact moment, every light in the house went out.
Sophie gasped.
A car door slammed outside.
Then came three slow knocks at the front door.
A familiar voice called through the darkness.
“Evelyn? It’s me. Please open the door.”
Julian recognized that voice instantly.
It belonged to Nadia.
But when Evelyn looked through the narrow window beside the door, she saw something that made her cover her mouth.
Nadia wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was Marcus Vale.
And between them stood a little girl wearing a red coat.
A little girl who looked remarkably like Sophie.
Julian stared at the child, unable to understand what he was seeing.
Then Nadia leaned toward the door and delivered the words that shattered the silence.
“Julian, there’s something about your father’s inheritance that your wife hasn’t told you. And that little girl outside may be the only person who can prove it.”
