đ€đ„ PART 2: THE MAFIA BOSS LOOKED AT THE BABY⊠THEN REALIZED SOMEONE HAD LIED TO HIM FOR THREE YEARS
Nathan Blackwood stood frozen in the middle of his office.
âGrace,â he whispered, his eyes fixed on the silver pendant in Lilyâs tiny hand. âTell me the truth. Is she connected to the woman I was told had died?â
Grace pulled Lily close to her chest.
âYou donât understand,â she said, her voice trembling. âI was trying to protect her.â
âProtect her from whom?â
Before Grace could answer, Lily reached toward Nathan again, her little fingers curling around his black tie.
âDada,â she murmured.
For the first time in years, the most feared man in New York looked completely defenseless.
Nathan slowly crouched in front of the child. When he saw the small birthmark behind her left ear, the color drained from his face.
He had seen that mark before.
On a baby pHàčÏographed in a hospital three years agoâthe night a fire destroyed a private medical wing and a woman named Elena disappeared.
Elena was Graceâs older sister.
And according to the official report, she had died that night.
âWhere did you get this pendant?â Nathan asked, his voice suddenly cold.
Grace swallowed hard.
âElena gave it to me before she disappeared. She told me that if anything happened to her, I had to keep Lily away from the Blackwood family.â
Nathan rose slowly.
âWhy?â
Graceâs eyes filled with tears.
âBecause she discovered what your father had done.â
The room fell silent.
Nathanâs father, Richard Blackwood, had died two years earlier. But his name still carried enough power to make seasoned criminals lower their voices.
âWhat did Elena discover?â Nathan demanded.
Grace shook her head. âI only know she found documents proving that someone in your family had arranged the hospital fire. She said the fire was meant to destroy evidenceânot kill her.â
Nathanâs jaw ŃÎčÔĐœŃened.
âWhy didnât you come to me?â
âBecause three days after Elena vanished, someone left a pHàčÏograph of Lilyâs hospital room at my apartment.â Graceâs voice broke. âOn the back, they wrote, âTell Nathan, and the child disappears next.ââ
For a moment, Nathan said nothing.
Then he took off his jacket and carefully wrapped it around Grace and Lily.
âNo one is touching either of you,â he said. âNot while Iâm alive.â
But Grace stepped away from him.
âYou canât promise that. You donât even know who youâre fighting.â
Nathanâs expression hardened.
âThen Iâll find out.â
He reached for his phone and called his most trusted security chief.
âLock down the estate. Nobody leaves. Check every camera recording from the past three months, and find out who has been accessing the old medical files.â
The security chief hesitated.
âSir, thereâs something you need to know. We found someone inside the east wing ten minutes ago.â
âWho?â
âA woman. She used a security code that was deactivated three years ago.â
Nathan went completely still.
âDid you identify her?â
The answer came in a low whisper.
âYes, sir. The cameras captured her face.â
The security chief sent the image to Nathanâs phone.
Grace glanced at the screenâand suddenly clutched Lily so ŃÎčÔĐœŃly that the baby began to cry.
The woman in the pHàčÏograph had Elenaâs eyes.
Her sister was alive.
But before Grace could speak, Nathanâs phone rang again. An unknown number appeared on the screen.
He answered.
A womanâs voice came through, quiet but unmistakable.
âNathan, if you want to know why Lily calls you âDada,â stop trusting the woman standing beside you.â
Graceâs face turned white.
Then the caller added six words that shattered everything Nathan believed.
âAsk Grace who Lilyâs father is.â
The call ended.
Nathan slowly turned toward Grace.
She held Lily close, tears streaming down her face.
And for the first time, Nathan wondered whether the woman he had protected for three years had been hiding a secret far more dangerous than the truth about his family.
âGrace,â he said softly, âwhose daughter is Lily?â
Grace opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, every light in the mansion went out.
A gunsHàčÏ echoed from the east wing.
And Lily began screaming.
TO BE CONTINUED IN PART 3⊠đ€đ„
The truth about Lilyâs father is closer than Nathan thinksâand the woman he buried in his memories may be the only person who can save them all.
