Southern Nazarene University Football Player Tyler Ulrich Pᴀsses Away After Suffering Traumatic Injury in Game

Southern Nazarene University announced with deep sadness that sophomore defensive back Tyler Ulrich has died from injuries sustained during a college football game. The 21-year-old from Azle, Texas, pᴀssed away on Thursday, October 15, 2026, five days after being critically hurt on the field.

Ulrich was playing for the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm against Ouachita Baptist University on Saturday, October 10, in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. During the contest, he suffered what the university described as a traumatic injury. The game was stopped for nearly an hour while medical personnel treated him on the field before he was transported to a hospital. He remained under medical care for the following five days, constantly surrounded by his family, teammates, coaches, and close friends.

In a statement released by the university, SNU president Keith Newman said: “Earlier today, Tyler Ulrich, a beloved member of our SNU football team and student body, pᴀssed away. Tyler sustained a traumatic injury during last Saturday’s football game. Since that time, he has been in the hospital, continually surrounded by the love, prayers, and presence of his family, teammates, and dear friends.”

Ulrich’s father, Mark Ulrich, confirmed the news in a heartfelt Facebook post. He shared that his son had suffered a head injury and that Tyler pᴀssed away at 11:13 a.m. on Thursday. Mark expressed graтιтude for the overwhelming support and prayers the family received, while describing his son as a young man who lived with strong faith, pᴀssion, and intensity both on and off the football field.

The university canceled its upcoming game against Southwestern Oklahoma State University scheduled for the following Saturday. Campus counseling services and pastoral staff were made available to students, staff, and team members as the community processed the loss.

Tributes poured in from the coaching staff. Head coach Dustin Hada remembered Ulrich as “a Man of God, ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, worker, joyous.” Former ᴀssistant coach Josh Stansell described him as a “warrior” and a rare individual who consistently put his teammates first and whose faith in Jesus Christ defined him.

Ulrich was in his third season with the program and had become one of the team’s most reliable defensive players. He recorded a high number of tackles this season and was known for his work ethic and positive presence in the locker room. As a finance major at the private Christian university in Bethany, Oklahoma, he was remembered by many as a student-athlete who balanced compeтιтion with strong personal values.

The tragedy has deeply affected both the Southern Nazarene campus and Ulrich’s hometown community in Azle, Texas. Supporters have shared messages of sympathy and prayers for his family during this difficult time.
