Young Survivor Saylor Graham Continues Her Fight After Being S.h.o.t in Bend Elementary School Attack

A 7-year-old girl known for her bright spirit and resilience is recovering in hospital after being sH๏τ in the face during a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly attack at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. Saylor Graham remains in serious but stable condition following emergency surgery, according to family friends and local reports.

The shooting took place on the afternoon of October 15, 2026, when a 16-year-old former student entered a special-needs classroom and opened fire. Three children and one teacher were killed. Saylor and another teacher, 54-year-old Becky Drury, were the only two people wounded who survived. Both required hospitalization. Saylor was struck in the face and later transferred to a hospital in Portland for continued care.

Saylor has lived her entire life with significant medical challenges. She was born with a rare genetic condition called CASK, which affects physical and cognitive development. She also has dysphagia, a condition that makes swallowing difficult. She is nonverbal and frequently uses a wheelchair, though she is able to walk with ᴀssistance. Despite these obstacles, people who know her describe her as joyful, determined, and full of energy.

In the 2024-25 school year, Bend Senior High School selected Saylor as its “Sparrow” through a national program that pairs high school students with children facing serious medical needs. Students raised money to help her family cover medical costs and offered ongoing support. Matt Sampson, executive director of Sparrow Clubs USA, said Saylor quickly became a source of inspiration for the teenagers who worked with her.

“Saylor is the definition of light and joy,” Sampson told reporters. “When she’s in the room, you can’t think of anything else. She’s very inspirational, very joyful, very courageous. She’s a fighter, and we’re praying that she fights through this.” He added that the community remains determined to stand with her family.

Since the attack, an outpouring of support has reached Saylor and her parents. Multiple fundraising campaigns launched within days have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help cover hospital bills, travel expenses for treatment in Portland, and other urgent needs while her parents stay by her side. A local restaurant also organized a community event to support the family.

Kaylub Giamanco, the father who fatally sH๏τ the attacker and stopped the violence after a teacher tackled the gunman, publicly expressed a wish to connect with Saylor’s family and offer encouragement.

The three children who died were ages 5, 8, and 11. Teacher Megan Lambert, 25, a volleyball coach, was also killed. Investigators continue to examine the motive of the shooter, Griffin J. John II. Authorities have said the weapon used in the attack had been legally purchased by his mother.

As the community of Bend mourns the four lives lost, many have pointed to Saylor’s survival as a source of hope. Those who have known her for years say her strength and positive spirit have already touched many people, and they are now praying that the same determination will help her through a long recovery.
