Mum’s ‘Routine’ Pregnancy Scan Turned Into a Desperate Fight to Save Her Baby Girl Born With Half a Heart

What should have been a joyful, ordinary 21-week pregnancy scan quickly became every parent’s worst nightmare for one young mum. During a routine anatomy check, doctors noticed an EIF marker that led to further testing. What they discovered left the family stunned: their baby girl had Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) — a rare and serious congenital condition in which the left side of the heart fails to develop properly.
From that moment, the pregnancy transformed from a time of happy anticipation into a carefully monitored medical mission. The family was referred to a fetal cardiologist, and a detailed plan was put in place to give their daughter the best possible chance at survival. Her mother even travelled nearly two-and-a-half hours to New Orleans for a planned delivery at Touro Infirmary, where a specialized team stood ready to step in the second the baby was born.
Labor went smoothly, but the fight for little Luke’s life began the instant she entered the world. Doctors immediately stabilized the newborn with a central line and medication to keep a critical blood vessel open. She was then transferred by ambulance to Children’s Hospital of New Orleans (now known as Manning Family Children’s Hospital) for intensive care.
The first days were an emotional rollercoaster for the family. They watched helplessly as their tiny daughter struggled to breathe, her heart rate spiking dangerously high while doctors worked around the clock with oxygen support and constant monitoring. Because of the high risk of complications, Luke could only receive minimal breast milk through a feeding tube.
At just seven days old, she underwent the Norwood procedure — one of the major open-heart surgeries required for babies born with HLHS. What followed was an exhausting two months inside the hospital. Luke battled collapsed lungs, infections, feeding difficulties, vocal cord paralysis, fluid buildup around the lungs, painful withdrawals, and delayed chest closure after surgery. “There were moments we felt completely terrified,” her family shared. “But she kept proving over and over again how strong she really is.”
After overcoming some of the hardest complications, one final challenge remained before she could go home: doctors needed to place a G-tube and perform a Nissen fundoplication to help with severe feeding issues caused by a hiatal hernia. Finally, after months surrounded by machines and monitors, Luke was strong enough to leave the hospital and go home with her loving family.
In the fragile months between surgeries, her parents carefully tracked every detail of her health — oxygen levels, weight, feeds, medications, and vital signs — while staying under close cardiology supervision through both in-person visits and telemedicine. But around four-and-a-half months old, doctors noticed signs that she was beginning to outgrow the circulation created by her first surgery. She was sent back to New Orleans for a cardiac catheterization, where specialists determined she would soon need the next stage of treatment: the Glenn procedure.
Despite everything this brave little girl has endured in her short life — multiple major surgeries, weeks in intensive care, and countless complications — Luke continues to inspire everyone around her with her fighting spirit. “She has already fought battles most adults could never imagine,” her family said. “And somehow, she still keeps fighting every single day.”
Her story is a powerful reminder of both the fragility and incredible resilience of new life. It highlights the dedication of specialized medical teams who work miracles for the tiniest patients and the unbreakable strength of parents who refuse to give up hope even when the odds seem overwhelming.
