Boulder Police Report New Interviews and Fresh Evidence Testing in JonBenét Case While Releasing Few Details

In mid-December 2025 the Boulder Police Department issued its annual public statement on the unsolved 1996 murder of JonBenét Ramsey, confirming that the investigation had not gone dormant. Chief Stephen Redfearn reported that detectives had conducted several new interviews and had re-interviewed people after receiving tips during the previous year. The department also collected new evidence and subjected existing materials to additional testing or retesting as forensic methods improved. Redfearn stressed that technology related to DNA analysis continues to advance and that investigators are consulting experts nationwide along with state and federal partners to determine the best approaches.

The scale of the overall effort remains large. Police have received more than 21,016 tips, letters, and emails since the case began and have interviewed more than 1,000 individuals across numerous states. A fresh inventory of collected evidence, prepared with FBI ᴀssistance, was made available for review. Investigators have long maintained that DNA remains a central focus because an unknown male profile was recovered from items ᴀssociated with the victim and has never matched any family member. The 2025 update did not specify which particular pieces of evidence were newly tested or retested, nor did it announce any match or identification.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty has stated that the office continues to work with Boulder Police, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI, and that any future arrest would rest on evidence capable of supporting a prosecution. Police have reiterated that they cannot discuss the precise results of recent testing without risking the integrity of the active investigation. The department’s position is that the combination of incoming tips, additional interviews, and re-examination of physical materials under newer laboratory conditions consтιтutes ongoing progress even in the absence of a public breakthrough.

Nearly thirty years after the crime, the official stance remains that the case is open and that further developments in forensic science or new information from the public could still produce results. Authorities continue to request that anyone with credible knowledge contact the Boulder Police tip line or designated email rather than circulate unverified theories. The December 2025 statement is the most recent formal confirmation that both human intelligence gathering and laboratory work are still under way.
