Sir Tom Jones is gone and The Voice UK just posted its lowest overnight audience on record

The latest Saturday episode of The Voice UK drew around 1.5 million overnight viewers, according to figures reported by Broadcast and picked up by The Sun and the Mirror on 4 October 2026, and that number now sits at the centre of a much larger argument about what the show is without Sir Tom Jones. The Welsh singer has been the face most closely tied to the red chairs since the BBC launch in 2012, on and off across thirteen seasons, and his exit was confirmed in early September after ITV decided he would not return as a full-time coach for series 15. The overnight figure is not the consolidated total. Catch-up and ITVX will add viewers later. It is still the weakest overnight the programme has recorded, and it arrives while the current series is still on air, before Cheryl, Aitch, Kelly Rowland and will.i.am have even taken the chairs that replace him. In its early BBC years the show regularly sat near seven to 8.5 million. A Saturday night below 1.5 million is a different programme in everything but name.

The short-term trail makes the October figure look less like an accident. Overnight reports put 5 September at about 1.9 million, 12 September at about 2.2 million and 19 September at about 1.6 million. The 3 October episode, placed around 9pm so it would not overlap with Strictly Come Dancing, continued the slide. Strictly, now fronted by Emma Willis, was reported above five million on a comparable Saturday. Moving The Voice later did not protect it. Scheduling, streaming and a pre-recorded format all dilute overnight numbers, and none of those factors started in September. What did start in September was the public confirmation that Sir Tom Jones would not keep a team. For a show whose idenั‚ฮนั‚y has rested on a small number of familiar coaches, the loss of the longest-running one is the change viewers can actually name.

ITV has not claimed the ratings drop is about him. The network has talked about a refresh, a new coaching dynamic and fresh energy. The difficulty is the order of events. The audience is shrinking on the series that still has the old panel, and the replacement panel does not air until 2027. will.i.am stays. Kelly Rowland returns for a second series. Cheryl and Aitch debut.

Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon take over hosting from Emma Willis. Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones leave with Sir Tom Jones. That is a near-total change of the faces people แด€ssociate with the brand. If the current cast cannot hold two million overnight, the bet is that a younger and more pop-facing panel can rebuild a habit that has been eroding for years. The 1.5 million does not prove that bet will fail. It does show how little room there is for another soft launch.
