Rare Disease Stole Her Strength and Voice — Now Kaitlin Is Conquering Triathlons
Born with an extremely rare form of distal muscular atrophy that affects her lower extremities and vocal cords, young Kaitlin has faced challenges most children could never imagine. From her earliest days, simple movements were difficult, and even breathing safely required medical intervention. Her condition gradually weakened the strength in her legs and affected her ability to speak normally, leading to years of hospital visits, treatments, and difficult procedures.
At St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Kaitlin underwent multiple major surgeries in hopes of improving her quality of life. One procedure rebuilt her airway so she could breathe more safely. Another involved surgeons carefully placing more than 30 pieces of medical hardware into her tiny body to support her fragile frame.
For her family, watching their little girl endure so much at such a young age was heartbreaking. “There were moments we felt completely helpless,” one family member shared. “But Kaitlin never stopped fighting, even on the hardest days.”
Despite the pain, long recoveries, and physical limitations, Kaitlin refused to let her condition define her future. She has turned her story into one of remarkable resilience and determination.
Today, she is doing something truly inspiring — participating in triathlon events designed to empower athletes with physical and visual disabilities. Crossing finish lines that once seemed impossible, Kaitlin has become a symbol of courage and determination to everyone around her.

“Seeing her smile while competing brings tears to our eyes every time,” her family said. “After everything she’s endured, she still finds joy in being a kid.”
Kaitlin’s journey is far more than a medical story. It is a powerful testament to the human spirit’s ability to rise above limitations. Every stroke in the water, every turn of the wheels, and every step she takes on the running course represents a victory over the challenges she was told would hold her back.

Her story reminds us that strength is not always measured by what our bodies can do, but by the courage we show when facing adversity. Kaitlin’s smile at the finish line carries a message louder than any diagnosis: limitations are not the end of the story — they are simply the beginning of a more inspiring one.
Through her triathlons, Kaitlin is not only proving what is possible for herself, but also lighting the way for other children and families facing rare conditions. She shows the world that with love, support, and unwavering determination, even the rarest challenges can become the foundation for extraordinary achievements.

To Kaitlin, her family, and everyone who has walked beside her on this journey — thank you for reminding us what true strength looks like. Your courage continues to inspire far beyond the finish line.
Keep shining, Kaitlin. The world is watching and cheering you on.
