The murder trial of former “American Idol” contestant and church worship leader Caleb Flynn continued this week with extensive testimony from the woman with whom he carried on a long-term affair. Prosecutors introduced transcripts of more than 100,000 messages exchanged between the pair, arguing that the communications reveal a clear motive for the killing of Flynn’s wife, Ashley.

Caleb Flynn, 40, faces charges of aggravated murder, murder, felonious ᴀssault, and related offenses in connection with the death of his wife of nearly 16 years. Ashley Flynn, a middle-school volleyball coach, was sH๏τ and killed inside the family’s home in Tipp City, Ohio, in the early morning hours of February 16, 2026. Flynn called 911 and reported that an intruder had broken into the house and fatally sH๏τ his wife while he was in their daughters’ bedroom. Prosecutors contend he staged the scene to resemble a home invasion. Flynn has pleaded not guilty. His defense team has acknowledged both the affair and the content of the messages but maintains that the prosecution lacks critical physical evidence, including the murder weapon, to prove he committed the crime.

Alleigha Botner, now 24, took the stand for two days and described how the relationship began. The two met at their Ohio church, where she was working as an intern and he volunteered on the worship team. Their romantic involvement started in March 2024 and continued for about a year and a half. They met regularly, traveled to nearby cities to avoid being recognized, discussed a possible future together, and even got matching Harry Potter-themed tattoos—hers visible on her forearm and his placed under his arm so his wife would not notice. The pair exchanged hundreds of messages each day across multiple platforms in an effort to keep the relationship private.

According to the testimony and the message transcripts presented in court, Flynn repeatedly expressed intense hostility toward his wife. He referred to her by a crude nickname and stated on multiple occasions that he wanted her “ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and gone.” In one message from August 2025 he wrote that he had stayed up until 4 a.m. thinking of ways to kill her without going to jail. In another he said that if he could kill her and avoid eternal consequences, he would do so “in a heartbeat.” Botner acknowledged writing some similar statements during the relationship but told the jury she regretted them and did not mean what she had written. She cried while reading one of her own messages aloud in court.

The affair began to unravel after Ashley Flynn discovered the messages during a cruise celebrating the couple’s 15th wedding anniversary in August 2025. Botner later pressed Flynn to leave the marriage. When he did not do so by a ᴅᴇᴀᴅline she set in January 2026, she ended contact. On February 15—the day before Ashley was killed—Flynn texted Botner that he planned to tell his wife the next day he wanted a divorce and that he was “not scared” about the conversation ahead.

Hours after the shooting, the two met at a gathering of church members held at Flynn’s in-laws’ home. Botner testified that Flynn hugged her and remarked that events had not unfolded the way they had expected. She said she asked him many questions about what had happened because the timing struck her as highly suspicious. The account he gave her about his location at the moment of the shooting differed from the version he provided to investigators.

Botner also admitted that after learning of Ashley’s death she deleted some messages and initially lied to the FBI. She said she was afraid the affair would become public and damage her reputation and employment. After consulting an attorney, she returned to investigators and provided a more complete account. On cross-examination, she stated that during the relationship she had not truly believed Flynn was capable of carrying out the threats contained in the messages. She added that she now believes he murdered his wife.

The trial is expected to continue with further witnesses in the coming days. Flynn’s attorneys continue to argue that while the affair and the messages are undisputed, the state still must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he was the person who killed Ashley Flynn.
