The search for three-year-old Noah Woods in Brantham, Suffolk, has ended in tragedy. Police confirmed that a child’s body recovered from Decoy Pond on September 16 was formally identified as Noah on September 17. His family has been informed, and police said the death is not being treated as suspicious, although enquiries remain ongoing before a report is submitted to the coroner.

Noah disappeared on the afternoon of September 15, after becoming separated from a relative at the Merriam Close playground. CCTV captured his last confirmed sighting at 2:37 p.m., showing him in the park before he ran down an alleyway toward a nearby housing estate and the area around Decoy Pond.

The footage became a crucial part of the investigation because it established Noah’s last known movements. Police said he was non-verbal, partially deaf and undergoing an autism ᴀssessment, meaning he might not respond to his name—factors that made the search especially challenging.

What followed was an extraordinary community response. Specialist police teams, dog units, helicopters, HM Coastguard, fire and rescue crews, search-and-rescue volunteers and other agencies joined the operation. Around 1,300 members of the public also helped search Brantham and the surrounding area.

But after an intense search, Metropolitan Police dive-team officers recovered a child’s body from Decoy Pond on Wednesday afternoon. At that stage, identification was still pending; the following day, Suffolk Constabulary confirmed the child was Noah.

The heartbreaking sequence—from a toddler playing in a park, to CCTV capturing his final known movements, to a huge search involving thousands of people, and finally the discovery in nearby water—has left the community devastated.

Police have stressed that there is currently no indication of criminality or suspicious circumstances. The remaining investigation will establish the circumstances surrounding Noah’s death, with the coroner ultimately determining the formal cause and circumstances.

For now, Suffolk Constabulary has asked the public to respect Noah’s family’s privacy as they face the loss of their three-year-old son. The search that brought an entire community together has ended—but the questions surrounding those final moments remain for investigators and the coroner to establish.
