He was exposed to a 4,160-volt electrical shock while working near high-voltage equipment. The electrical current entered through the top of his head and exited through the back of his neck.

The force of the injury was extraordinary.

He suffered a traumatic brain injury, skull fracture, cerebral hemorrhage and severe burns across his upper body. The electrical trauma also caused two cardiac arrests, leaving his condition critically unstable.

Doctors placed him in a medically induced coma as they worked to stabilize him.

Because of the complexity and severity of his injuries, he required transfer to specialized trauma and burn-care facilities, where his recovery would become a long and demanding process.

The burns and tissue damage left permanent consequences. During his recovery, he lost his right ear and a large portion of his left ear.

He would also undergo approximately 10 reconstructive surgeries, including several procedures involving muscle grafts, as doctors worked to repair the extensive damage caused by the accident.

For him, recovery meant enduring procedures, rehabilitation and the uncertainty of what his life would look like afterward.

The early outlook was extremely grim.

Yet somehow, he kept fighting.
