At just seven months old, little Louie Jenkins faced a terrifying battle that changed his life in a matter of hours. 💔

After developing meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia, Louie became critically ill and was given only a 50% chance of survival. His condition deteriorated so rapidly that his parents feared they might lose their precious little boy. 🙏💙

After spending nine and a half weeks in hospital, including two weeks in intensive care at Leeds General Infirmary, the brave baby was finally able to return home to Colne with his parents, Julie and Warren. 🏡❤️

The illness left Louie with devastating injuries. Both of his legs had to be amputated below the knees. He also lost all the fingers on his left hand and the tips of the fingers on his right hand. 💔

Yet despite everything he had endured, Louie remained a happy and loving little boy. 🌈👶

His mother Julie described him as her “little fighter” and said the family was simply overjoyed that he had survived.

“It was extremely frightening when it was confirmed that he had meningitis,” she said. “It is something that you hear about in the news but don’t ever expect your child to get.”

The family considers themselves incredibly fortunate that Louie survived without brain damage. ❤️‍🩹

Although his amputations have been heartbreaking, his parents say the most important thing is that their beautiful son is alive and finally back home with them. 🏡💙

🚨 A NIGHT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Louie had seemed like an ordinary baby when Julie bathed him with his sister, Francesca. But later that night, something suddenly felt wrong.

He repeatedly woke up crying, became sick and developed a fever. Julie gave him some Calpol and continued watching him closely.

Then she noticed two tiny red pinprick marks on his skin. 🔴

She pressed on the spots, but they did not disappear.

Julie immediately realized that something was seriously wrong.

Within minutes, Louie had become grey and floppy. His arms and legs began turning purple as his condition rapidly worsened. 😢

Julie called an ambulance, and Louie was rushed to Airedale General Hospital, where doctors immediately treated him for meningitis.

Blood tests later confirmed that he had meningococcal septicaemia — a life-threatening infection that had progressed with frightening speed. 🚑💔

Doctors later told Julie that her quick reaction and decision to check the rash may have saved her son’s life.

“The doctors said that if I hadn’t checked on him and spotted the rash when I did, Louis probably would have died,” she recalled.

The first 48 hours were described as touch and go. After that, doctors estimated that Louie had around a 50% chance of surviving — a figure that slowly improved as he continued to fight. 🙏✨

❤️‍🩹 A LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY
Louie was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary, where he spent two weeks in intensive care before moving to the children’s surgical ward.

As he began to recover, doctors realized that some of his limbs had suffered irreversible damage.

His legs had turned black, and initially there were fears that much more extensive amputations would be necessary. His arms were also severely affected. 💔

For Julie and Warren, the news was devastating.

But as time pᴀssed, Louie’s arms and legs began to heal better than expected.

Eventually, doctors determined that they could amputate below the knees rather than remove his legs higher up. They also concluded that his entire left arm would not need to be amputated.

For his parents, it was the best outcome they could have hoped for. 🙏💙

Julie said that although it was difficult to accept the amputations, their only wish throughout the ordeal was simple: to bring their little boy home.

🌈 HOME AT LAST
After nine and a half weeks in hospital, that long-awaited day finally arrived.

Louie was allowed to return home to the family who had never stopped fighting for him. 🏡❤️

Despite everything he had experienced, his mother says he is a remarkably happy baby.

At first, being surrounded by tubes and wires made cuddling difficult, but once he began recovering, Louie quickly returned to being his cheerful self.

Now Julie and Warren want to turn their heartbreaking experience into something that could help save other children.

“I had heard of meningitis and the signs of it, but I never knew what happened after you got it,” Julie said.

“We want to try and raise awareness of the serious long-term effects that it can have, including brain damage and amputation.”
